Serie A Clubs To Form Their Own League
Italian football is about to get a major awakening. The news coming out of Italy following a meeting between clubs of both football divisions is that Serie A clubs will brake away from Serie B to form their own league that they can operate on their own.
This is a major shakeup for Italian soccer for two reasons. One, the top clubs feel that the current tax laws and revenue sharing system with clubs who play in lower leagues hurts their chances of competing with other top European divisions.
Two, because this is something that Italian football has needed for some time. For a really long time. The new league will be known as 'Lega Serie A'. Some will ague that the new league would have to named instead 'Lega Italia' or something along the lines.

Lega Serie A would be just fine for now.
This is great news for soccer fans in Italy, because it gives the club breathing space in terms of finance, but also with a new league, comes greater responsibilities and autonomy in the day-to-day business of the football clubs.
A great example is the Premier League, which was formed in 1992 as a result of 20 clubs deciding to leave the Football League in order to have more say and control over finances and football operations.
This new Lega Seria A in Italiy should help provide a balance for Italian futbol clubs and also provide an opportunity for Italian futbol to evolve further more as the English have over time.
Lega Serie A is expected to begin operations in July 1st, 2010—right after the World Cup ends.
See you there when the party finally starts!
