UFC 160 Results: Top 10 Heavyweights in the UFC
The landscape of the heavyweight division cleared up at UFC 160, as the champion swatted away a challenger and a former champion stepped up to the plate to create a rubber match.
Cain Velasquez retained his title with a quick knockout victory of Antonio Silva. In a little under 90 seconds, the champ smoked Silva with punches and was able to defend his gold.
Junior dos Santos made his fight entertaining and surprised fans with a spinning kick knockout of Mark Hunt. The concrete-jawed Hunt made the fight interesting, though, which is why it got Fight of the Night honors.
Here are the top 10 heavyweights in the aftermath of UFC 160.
10. Roy Nelson
1 of 10Last Fight: Knockout win vs. Cheick Kongo
Next Fight: vs. Stipe Miocic at UFC 162
Power and toughness define Roy Nelson. He's used both to skyrocket his stock in the UFC.
One punch is all it takes for him to win a fight. Just ask Cheick Kongo and Dave Herman, recent recipients of his one-punch KO power.
Nelson next faces Stipe Miocic on late notice. That fight will be another step in the direction of getting a title shot.
9. Josh Barnett
2 of 10Last Fight: Submission win vs. Nandor Guelmino
Next Fight: N/A
Now that Josh Barnett is in the UFC, the landscape of the heavyweight division has changed. The former Strikeforce fighter brings his grinding submission grappling style to the Octagon in an effort to be a world champion.
He is yet to fight or have an opponent named, but he should get a top opponent. Many are calling for Frank Mir, which would be a great fight for the fans.
8. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
3 of 10Last Fight: Submission win vs. Dave Herman
Next Fight: vs. Fabricio Werdum at UFC on Fuel TV 10
The legendary Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira has not slowed down much in his career, showing age is not a factor. Nogueira finds himself in the upper echelon of the division with a chance of finding an eventual title shot.
He is currently waiting for The Ultimate Fighter Brazil 2 to finish filming so he may fight opposing coach Fabricio Werdum. A win over "Vai Cavalo" would give him high consideration in the division.
7. Frank Mir
4 of 10Last Fight: Decision loss vs. Daniel Cormier
Next Fight: N/A
Frank Mir is a former champion and may never win the gold again, but he is still a top guy in the division. Not only that, but Mir is the most dangerous submission artist in any UFC weight class.
He is coming off a loss to Daniel Cormier, but he should get a fight in debuting Josh Barnett. It would quench fans' thirst and provide a memorable encounter.
6. Alistair Overeem
5 of 10Last Fight: Knockout loss vs. Antonio Silva
Next Fight: vs. Travis Browne at UFC on Fox Sports 1
Remember when Alistair Overeem was a kickboxing world champion and the guy who was going to dethrone the heavyweight champion? Well, he's still a kickboxing world champion, but he's nowhere near a title shot right now.
Overeem's loss to Antonio Silva was a massive setback, especially since he debuted with a knockout of Brock Lesnar. He now has to claw his way back into the spotlight when he fights Travis Browne.
5. Antonio Silva
6 of 10Last Fight: Knockout loss vs. Cain Velasquez
Next Fight: N/A
Antonio Silva got his shot at a rematch, but he was quickly denied by Cain Velasquez in the UFC 160 main event.
He followed up his biggest career win against Alistair Overeem with his quick drubbing at the hands of Velasquez. He is still a top heavyweight, but he won't see the title picture for some time.
"Big Foot" must make a statement in his next outing.
4. Fabricio Werdum
7 of 10Last Fight: Knockout win vs. Mike Russow
Next Fight: vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC on Fuel TV 10
Former Strikeforce contender Fabricio Werdum is now a contender in the UFC. In fact, one more win could give him the next title shot.
Right now, Werdum has Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira on his plate. Both are high-level jiu-jitsu fighters, so that fight may come down to who is the better striker.
3. Daniel Cormier
8 of 10Last Fight: Decision win vs. Frank Mir
Next Fight: N/A
Daniel Cormier may not be long for the heavyweight division, but he still finds himself ranked at No. 3.
Cormier may be going down to light heavyweight in an effort to take the title off Jon Jones. Of course, that is if he can make the weight cut.
For now he is opponent-less, but he has his first UFC fight under his belt. Look for Cormier to do big things in this sport.
2. Junior Dos Santos
9 of 10Last Fight: Knockout win vs. Mark Hunt
Next Fight: vs. Cain Velasquez
A spinning heel kick and a few follow-up punches was all it took for Junior dos Santos to get his title rematch with Cain Velasquez.
Dos Santos knocked out the concrete-jawed Mark Hunt at UFC 160. And he did it in impressive fashion, showing his impending rematch with Velasquez is for all the marbles.
1. Cain Velasquez
10 of 10Last Fight: Knockout win vs. Antonio Silva
Next Fight: vs. Junior dos Santos
Not much to explain here, as Cain Velasquez is the heavyweight champ.
At UFC 160, Velasquez stopped Antonio Silva quickly. That win, combined with Junior dos Santos' win, ensures a rubber match for the gold.
Here's to hoping that fight becomes an all-time classic.
