Kobe Bryant's Parents Say He Lied About Memorabilia

Daniel O'BrienJun 8, 2018

The latest chapter of Kobe Bryant's feud with his parents over memorabilia involves them saying the Los Angeles Lakers star lied in sworn statements.

Bryant, who asserted that he never gave his parents permission to sell over 100 items to a New Jersey auction house, was accused by his mother, Pamela, of falsifying reports and giving an untrue account of a May 2 phone call.

Los Angeles Daily News Lakers beat reporter Mark Medina detailed his mother's accusations:

In a declaration filed in federal court in Camden (N.J.) Monday, Pamela insisted sworn statements from Kobe and his wife, Vanessa, “contained many false statements.” That included Kobe’s account of a May 2 phone conversation, in which she allegedly agreed he had never told her she could have his belongings.

“This conversation never occurred and I never made that statement,” Pamela Bryant said. She also added Kobe “never demanded the return of any of the items, nor were they in any way improperly taken from him without his permission.”

This dispute is turning into a full-blown he-said, she-said battle.

Kobe and his wife, Vanessa, are pitted against his parents and his grandmother. Medina reports that Bryant's father, Joe (a former NBA player), said Kobe gave the various items to his mother as gifts over the years, but Kobe insists that he doesn't know how several of the items ended up in her possession.

The articles in question include high school jerseys, his 1996 Pennsylvania high school state championship ring, a couple of Lakers championship rings and a 1999 Teen Choice Awards surfboard and trophy.

Kobe says he doesn't know how the Teen Choice pieces landed in Pamela's possession, and he insists he last saw it at his home.

So far, we don't know who to believe, because both parties are 100 percent steadfast in their version of the story.
