Floyd Mayweather vs. Robert Guerrero Results: Projecting Each Fighter's Future
After an excellent fight Saturday night, Floyd “Money” Mayweather (44-0) defeated Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-2-1) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas via a unanimous decision.
The unanimous-decision victory wasn’t the dominant performance from Mayweather that many boxing fans are used to, but the prison stint that caused the long layoff from the ring for Money played a role in the veteran’s slow start to this fight.
While Guerrero was thoroughly outclassed Saturday, there is no shame in the effort he put forth—43 others have thought they could beat Money as well—and this fight has helped launch The Ghost as a mainstream star.
Now that the event is over and each man will have time to heal and plan for the next fight, boxing fans all over the world are excited to see which challenger each of these fighters chooses for their next bout.
Floyd Mayweather vs. Canelo Alvarez: Battle of the Unbeaten
While the win over Guerrero was far from his prettiest fight, Money proved that even after a yearlong layoff, he is still the unquestionable No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the sport of boxing today.
As great as this triumphant return was for Mayweather, Money was expected to win Saturday night and must now find a challenge worthy of his greatness. Instead of fighting one of the veterans he has already beaten, it’s time to test his mettle against a blossoming star.
There is no better option than Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.
Alvarez is just 22 years old but has already amassed a hugely impressive 42-0-1 record over his career. With a unique combination of speed, power and in-ring I.Q. for a fighter his age, the 36-year-old Mayweather would be pushed to his physical and mental limits.
The battle of the undefeated stars would be a megafight boxing fans could get behind, but whether Mayweather would be willing to fight the potent young star is the top question to watch over the coming months.
Predicted Next Opponent: Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-0-1)
Robert Guerrero vs. Miguel Cotto: Redemption
While few gave Guerrero a legitimate chance to walk away victorious Saturday night, The Ghost proved his toughness against the greatest fighter of our generation.
There is nothing wrong with how The Ghost performed, he was just outclassed.
The future is still bright for Guerrero, who became a star in the sport after the Showtime All Access show that followed both fighters before the marquee bout. With casual and hardcore boxing fans alike knowing The Ghost now, many would pay for one of his next fights.
That’s why Guerrero needs another big name that would test his skills; someone like Miguel Cotto.
Cotto is one of the toughest fighters in the business, and if The Ghost wants a chance to redeem himself by fighting either Mayweather again or possibly even Manny Pacquiao down the line, he must jump to light middleweight—or agree on a catch weight—in order to fight Cotto.
This would be a marquee bout that would sell quite a few pay-per-views despite not having one of the top names in the sport on the card.
Predicted Next Opponent: Miguel Cotto (37-4)
