Mayweather vs. Guerrero Results: Possible Fights for Money to Take Next
As expected, Floyd Mayweather picked apart Robert Guerrero for 12 rounds to claim a unanimous decision victory to retain his WBC welterweight title and capture The Ring championship.
Despite a year-long layoff, time served in prison and his age (36), Mayweather proved that he still has what it takes to dominate fights and do it in style. Money's signature defense was in top form as he consistently forced his opponent to hit nothing but air and slowly picked him apart with counters.
Considering the opponent, it served as a mere reminder of Floyd's immense skill, as opposed to an actual challenge to his throne.
But now that Mayweather has his return to the ring out of the way, it's time to start talking about his next opponent. According to ESPN's Dan Rafael, Mayweather intends to fight again in September.
However, according to Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated, Mayweather suffered an injury to his right hand during his bout with Guerrero. If the injury turns out to be serious, it could delay his planned return to the ring.
Whenever he's able to step back into the ring, these are the likely candidates that Mayweather needs to consider.
Canelo Alvarez
This is the most obvious choice that everyone wants to see.
Mayweather faced criticism for taking on a former lightweight in Guerrero. Because he's relatively new to the welterweight division, the perception was that Guerrero didn't have power to give Mayweather problems.
Fighting a bigger, stronger opponent like Alvarez would answer those critics and provide the fans with a bout that everyone wants to see. Canelo is coming off of an exciting win over Austin Trout and has the power and style that is most likely to give Mayweather a challenge.
According to Richard Schaefer via Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated, Alvarez will be available to be on the Sept. 14 pay-per-view.
Alvarez will be available for the card. Mayweather is set to be on the card if healthy. Mayweather needs an opponent. It's fairly simple. This matchup makes the most sense.
Winner of Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Timothy Bradley Fight
If Mayweather is forced to sit out because of a hand injury, the winner of this Sept. 14 fight should be in serious consideration.
With both boxers notching recent wins against Manny Pacquiao, Juan Manuel Marquez and Timothy Bradley would both have the right angle to hype a fight against Mayweather.
Money can already list Marquez as one of his many victims throughout his career. He defeated the Mexican counter-puncher via unanimous decision in 2009, but that was a long time ago. Marquez also had lost to Pacquiao twice with a draw before defeating him in the fourth bout.
Bradley has yet to get a shot at Mayweather but would join elite company in the welterweight division if he can claim a victory over Marquez.
Whoever wins this bout will be one of the hottest names in the division and one of the few opponents with the credibility to sell a fight against the champion.
Paulie Malignaggi if He Gets Past Adrien Broner
If Mayweather doesn't want to fight Alvarez and can't get a fight with either Marquez or Bradley, then Malignaggi could be the next best option.
That is, if he can get past his upcoming bout with Adrien Broner.
Broner is a serious contender for Malignaggi's WBA welterweight crown. He's a lightweight champion and has serious skills inside the ring, but he's already made it clear that he won't be fighting Mayweather (h/t Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports).
Malignaggi isn't likely to have the skills that would be a problem for Mayweather, but he is one of the best welterweights in the sport. If he can take out a fighter that many see as a younger, smaller version of Money, then it could set up an intriguing bout.
