Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: Money and Pac-Man Destined to Meet in 2013
May 4, 2013 has been one of the most highly anticipated days in the recent history of professional sports, as Orb won the Kentucky Derby, and Floyd Mayweather defeated Robert Guerrero.
While both events deserve our attention, it's the latter triumph that sparks the greatest desire in all of professional sports: a fight between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao—something that is destined to transpire in 2013.
Mayweather took down Guerrero in convincing fashion, winning the WBC Welterweight title by unanimous decision. All three judges agreed upon a score of 117-111 in a match that saw Guerrero fight with passion but lack the ability to connect.
Mayweather's defense was simply too much to handle.
According to Rick Reeno of BoxingScene.com, Mayweather plans on next scheduling a fight for September of 2013. That would be his second fight of the calendar year and thus opens up the door for a fight against top contenders.
Per Reeno, Amir Khan is an option, while Luis Sandoval of BoxingScene.com reports that Saul "Canelo" Alvarez could be the next in line. As intriguing as those two fights may be, however, we cannot be naive about Mayweather's career and status.
Everyone is gunning for him, and just because someone sends out a challenge doesn't mean it's the only option available.
""If I paid attention [to every fighter calling me out], it's like I was telling Kevin [Iole], everybody wants to fight me...If that fight [with Amir Khan] presents itself in the future, that will happen."
"
Due to Khan's rising star power and Canelo's similar status, there's no denying that both fights present attractive options for Mayweather and the boxing world.
With that being said, the world has been dreaming of a fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao for multiple calendar years. Even if there are better fights in terms of deserving contenders, there's no way around one simple truth.
We want to see the active legends go toe-to-toe.
According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, Floyd Mayweather stated that he has 30 months left in his illustrious career. Mayweather projects that this gives him five more fights, which closes the window on a clash between he and Pacquiao.
Just don't think it's impossible.
""Well, you know, I only have 30 months left, so I want to just help clean the sport up. After [the Robert Guerrero] fight I've got five more fights. That's all I got to do, finish putting them stamps on my legacy."
"
What better stamp to acquire than a win over Pacquiao?
No matter how many fights Pacquiao may lose, there is no bigger draw in boxing than the hypothetical fight between he and Mayweather. That's the key here, as Floyd "Money" Mayweather is clearly all about his cash.
There's no way to generate more money than with a fight against Pacquiao.
According to a recent report via ESPN UK, Pacquiao is still looking to fight Mayweather. He's willing to abide by any rules necessary and clearly wants to end his career in the same manner as "Money"—with a career-defining fight.
I believe I speak for the world when I say the following three words: Get it done.
