Hector Camacho Jr. vs. Arturo Crespin: Date, Predictions and Preview

Brian MaziqueMay 1, 2013

The Camacho name still generates curiosity from boxing fans. Though Hector Camacho Sr. passed away in November 2012 and Hector Camacho Jr. (55-5-1, 30 KO) is not a major contender, boxing fans still take notice when the name comes across their TV or computer monitors.

On Friday night in Aruba, Camacho Jr. will take on Arturo Crespin (8-2-1, 3 KO) in just his second fight since his father was killed.

Originally, Jose Luis Castillo was supposed to be Camacho Jr's opponent, but that fight was called off. A far younger and less-experienced Crespin will bring a different dynamic to the bout.

Still Searching For Success

Camacho Jr.'s best days are gone. Still, at 34 years old, and less than six months removed from the tragic death of his legendary father, he fights on.

In his prime, he was never an elite fighter—at least not by the standards that were set for him. Though he has attempted to emulate the swag and style that made Camacho Sr. famous, he has struggled to find major success.

He did win his last fight, which was his first since Camacho Sr. passed away. It was a fourth-round KO of a very marginal fighter named Arsenio Terrazas.

At this point in Camacho Jr.'s career, he needs hand-picked opponents to have any success. That is exactly what Crespin is designed to be.

In the Ring

To Camacho Jr.'s credit, his fights are usually exciting. He does have some power, but he has shown a weak chin and poor defense in his career.

Three of the five losses on his record have come by TKO/KO. Most recently, Camacho Jr. was stopped by Luis Grajeda in the sixth round of their July 2012 bout.

Conditioning has been a major issue for Camacho Jr. It has been a while since he was in good shape for a fight. He competes at super middleweight now, and definitely looks fleshy in the ring.

Take a look at him stopping J.D. Charles in June 2013:

A similar end could be in store for Crespin, although the 23-year-old does have a chance because of Camacho Jr.'s defensive lapses.

Looking to Become the Latest to Topple the Son of a Legend

Most fight fans have never heard of Crespin. That lack of notoriety is understandable as his career has been nothing special up to this point.

He is still very young, but this fight with Camacho Jr. could possibly be the highlight of his career.

Win or lose, when Crespin hangs up his gloves, at least he'll be able to tell his family he fought Camacho Jr.

It's a good chance that will be the silver lining in an otherwise rough evening.

In the Ring

Crespin has never been in a fight scheduled for more than eight rounds. Friday night's 10-round tilt will be new territory for him.

I can't see it lasting that long, though.

Take a look at Crespin in this bout with Janks Trotter:

It didn't exactly end well for him. He was dropped in the first round and then completely annihilated in the second. The finish comes near the 5:08 mark.

You may have noticed that Crespin is an aggressive fighter who looks to come forward. The only problem with this style is that he comes forward with no lateral movement. He also holds his head straight up, which creates an easy target.

If he does this against Camacho Jr., he'll have flashbacks of that night against Trotter.

Prediction

Crespin will likely be stopped inside of three rounds. Because he is aggressive and Camacho Jr. may not be in the best shape, I give Crespin a minute chance of pulling the upset.

However, this looks like a showcase fight for an over-the-hill fighter just trying to get a few wins under his belt.

Follow me, because I love boxing and you do too.
