UFC on Fox 7 Results: 5 Fights for Frank Mir to Take Next

Jordy McElroyJun 6, 2018

MMA trainer Greg Jackson may want to mull over the possibility of sending Frank Mir to wrestling camp for the summer.

Despite his much-improved striking and world-class submission skills, Mir was once again beat up and bullied by the stronger wrestler in his UFC on Fox 7 co-main event bout against Daniel Cormier.

The majority of the bout was spent in the clinch against the cage with Cormier controlling and landing a few short strikes every now and then. Despite being the significantly larger man, Mir was completely outmatched in the wrestling department by the former U.S. Olympian.

All three judges scored every round for Cormier and handed him a lopsided unanimous decision.

Mir has always been a talented heavyweight, but he has never showcased the wrestling abilities to thwart the gargantuan grapplers emerging in today's division. An inability to maintain leverage in the grappling department also cost him bouts against Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin.

Under the tutelage of Jackson, Mir will continue to improve as a fighter overall. It was nice to see him mix things up with more diverse kicks. Still, a Mir with strong wrestling coupled with his endless knowledge of Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a scary man.

Here are five fights for him to take next.

Brendan Schaub

1 of 5

A couple of months ago, Brendan Schaub was in the exact same spot Mir is in now.

He was coming off back-to-back losses and his back was against wall. With the weight of the world on his shoulders, Schaub overcame everything at UFC 157, where he earned a unanimous-decision victory over Lavar Johnson.

Can Mir do the same?

A bout against Schaub is certainly a great place to start.

Gabriel Gonzaga

2 of 5

Gabriel Gonzaga's three-fight win streak came to a sudden halt in his first-round knockout loss to Travis Browne at the TUF 17 finale.

Like Mir, Gonzaga is also a world-class Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner with much-improved standup.

Stylistically, this bout mirrors the exciting matchups Mir had with Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.

Todd Duffee

3 of 5

Fans didn't get the fight they hoped for with Mir and Cormier, but against a fighter like Todd Duffee, there would be guaranteed fireworks.

For a long time, Duffee has begged the UFC for the big-money contract. A monetary increase is definitely something that comes along with defeating a legend like Mir.

Against Duffee, Mir would have an opportunity to rebound from back-to-back losses and put on a great show for fans.

Stefan Struve

4 of 5

Perhaps the most interesting fight on this list is Mir taking on the always tough and gritty Stefan Struve.

Mir has managed to stay afloat in the middle of the pack of the top 10 heavyweight rankings. Struve, on the other hand, has had plenty of inspiring performances in the Octagon, but he has yet to truly prove himself as a legitimate contender.

A win over a fighter like Mir would prove he belongs in the upper crust of the heavyweight division.

Alistair Overeem

5 of 5

If Mir is really looking to make a statement and turn things around, a win over former Strikeforce heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem would go a long way.

With the rest of the upper-echelon heavyweights busy with upcoming fights, Overeem is the only opponent that makes sense for Mir at this time.

Overeem is coming off a devastating third-round knockout loss to top heavyweight contender Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva.
