Tevez, Rooney, Berbatov...Who Else Would You Want As Your Front Three?

Andrew GloverApr 20, 2009

As we near the end of the Barclay's English Premier League season, a constant buzz is looming about which team will make the biggest splash in the transfer market during the summer.

We all know about the wealth that Roman Abramovich and Malcolm Glazer bring to their respective teams, Chelsea and Manchester United, but at what point does money not matter that much?

We can use the New York Yankees as a prime example of wealth not meaning much, they make gargantuan splashes and it hasn't equaled success as of late.

In the EPL, the wealth has made a difference; Chelsea have brought in players like Michael Ballack, Nicolas Anelka and Deco with the resources Abramovich provides.

Much the same has been true for Manchester United, who have brought in Carlos Tevez, Dimitar Berbatov, Anderson and Nani.

Other members of 'The Big Four' in the EPL have chosen to use cash to bring in big-name players to enhance the talent of their teams and hopefully win European Championships.

Liverpool brought in Robbie Keane this season, though he didn't last long and returned to Tottenham.

Manchester City bought Robihno this season, though he hasn't been all that effect for City this season as they still sit at the middle of the table.

The difference that the EPL has in relation to other leagues that don't have a salary cap is that each contest carries much more weight and matters so much more.

With 162 games, baseball teams have a lot of margin for error in baseball. Teams in the EPL don't have that luxury, so each game managers have to put out a lineup that is the best possible.

There is the exception however, with contests in the early rounds of the FA Cup and Carling Cup when teams can rest their studs and allow their young players a chance to gain experience.

For the most part, though, managers like Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger need to field a competitive team in every match of the season.

The purpose of this article is bring to attention the ability to sign big time players, but not necessarily having a starting role in every game.

Manchester United is a great example of this and so is Chelsea, at any one time Chelsea could field a squad with 4-6 players who are the captains of their national squad, that is impressive.

The result has been positive for these teams, being highly competitive in Europe and bringing home trophies in England, but at what cost?

Quite frankly, a team with Berbatov, Wayne Rooney, Tevez, Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani, and Ryan Giggs, all of whom can and have played as a forward this season, there aren't enough openings to accommodate for all.

Even with a 4-4-2 or 4-3-2-1 which Manchester United like to play, how can you even intend to put out the best possible team?

And yet teams like Manchester United and Chelsea and Liverpool, teams that have world-class players at every position, all locked up under contract for three or four years, go after bigger fish every transfer season.

It's no wonder that Tevez is looking elsewhere this coming summer or why the speculation of Ronaldo going to Real Madrid.

Didier Drogba had issues at Stamford Bridge, though he seems to be fine now, but upon Anelka making his move south from Bolton, why wouldn't Drogba feel betrayed?

Luckily Drogba and Anelka have teamed up very nicely, but throw in Salomon Kalou, who gets the nod then?

As you read other stories about who is talking with whom this transfer season, and even the weeks leading up to transfer season, think about the likelihood of a player staying happy for a long time with one club, regardless of the moves they make.

Look at Paolo Maldini with AC Milan, he's been there for over two decades, and they have brought in other talents, but Milan also hasn't given up on him either.
