The Rock vs. John Cena: 5 Bold Predictions for Their WrestleMania 29 Match
WrestleMania XXIX will be headlined by the rematch of The Rock versus John Cena. Greatness versus redemption.
This time, the WWE Championship is on the line.
Between the live attendance, number of buys and the increased price for viewing it on pay-per-view, plus new options such as WWE's app to watch the show, it's my opinion that this years WrestleMania will be the most profitable ever.
So here are five predictions I have for the main event of the biggest WrestleMania to date.
An Eminem Song for John Cena's Entrance
1 of 5WWE has customized special video packages and entrances for the main event matches for the past several years at WrestleMania.
I think this year we'll see video packages once again for both competitors involved in the WWE title match. For John Cena, I'm thinking an attitude, rise-above production as only WWE can do, set to an Eminem track.
Eminem and Cena have similarities in their personae. Obviously Cena came on the scene with the "white rapper" gimmick, but their legacies also have parallels. Eminem has dealt with a lot of detractors refusing to give him credit for his work in his genre. This is all too familiar for Cena in the world of professional wrestling.
Eminem soundtracking the entrance for Cena would also work perfectly as opposition to The Rock, who I think could have a Jay-Z song for his entrance.
It Will Take More Than 1 Finisher
2 of 5For a live event, a finisher is more than enough to beat your opponent.
WrestleMania XXIX, title on the line in front of 80,000―it takes more than one.
I can easily see each man kicking out of the other's finisher once.
False finishes are a special seasoning that gets sprinkled into a match and takes it to another level. But too much seasoning and you've ruined the recipe. The seasoning has to be well-measured, and the false finishes have to be well-timed.
Well-timed both in kicking out at the right time, which will have those sitting feet from the ring thinking the match was over, and well-timed in that it happens at the appropriate spot in the match.
Let's Go Cena, Cena Sucks
3 of 5Another magical element which puts matches like these in their own class is the vocal battles the sold-out crowd will get involved in to show support or dislike for The Rock and John Cena.
One of the great WrestleMania matches is The Rock versus Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania XVIII. A key factor to the success of the match is the unbelievable energy coming from the crowd, as they were split on who to cheer on.
The New York/New Jersey market is known to be anti-Cena in large numbers, but those who support Cena can get loud.
It's part of what makes it a WrestleMania classic, and it will be worth the price to be in attendance at MetLife stadium to experience the split crowd reaction.
John Laurinaitis Will Be Seen During the Match
4 of 5The villain in a suit known as John Laurinaitis returned to WWE television after months of being gone. He returned to offer to be in The Rock's corner and guaranteed The Rock he would win if he accepted his offer.
The Rock did a classic babyface move in shaking Laurinaitis' hand but quickly turning that handshake into a setup for a People's Elbow.
It's all been Wrestling 101 up to this point, and the next step is for Laurinaitis to resurface again when the big match takes place.
I predict Laurinaitis will attempt to help Cena in the match. Cena could embrace his help, begin an alliance with Laurinaitis and turn heel. Cena could also use Laurinaitis's help and then give an AA to him as soon as the match is over.
This would be what Stone Cold Steve Austin should have done in 2001 at WrestleMania XVII: He should have taken the help of McMahon, but then stunned him as soon as he got what he needed out of him.
Finally, Cena could refuse the help of Laurinaitis and knock him out in immediate reaction. Perhaps the former Executive Vice President of Talent Relations breaks up the referee's count when The Rock pins Cena, and Cena doesn't want to win that way.
This could then lead to Laurinaitis being associated with a heel in the future and that being the next feud for Cena.
A lot of possibilities, but one thing is for sure: Big Johnnie will be at WrestleMania in the main event.
John Cena Will Walk out Standing Tall
5 of 5John Cena is going to walk out looking strong.
That DOESN'T mean he'll win the title.
If I had to bet, I would say Cena leaves as champion. However, The Rock being booked for the next pay-per-view in May does leave room to wonder if WWE keeps the title on The Rock but allows John Cena to get the better of The Rock physically.
There is a lot of grey area here on how this could be booked. I can't fully commit to Cena absolutely being the champion, but I am fully committed to the prediction that Cena won't be sitting on the ramp in disappointment watching The Rock celebrate in the ring.
