MLB: All Time Caucasian All-Star Team

Cliff EasthamApr 10, 2009

(NOTE: This was intended to be written as a  slide-show, however I can't upload photos anymore and don't know why.)

As a preface to this article, let me first say that it has nothing to do with race or culture.  It is simply my opinion of the best Caucasian players in baseball at their particular position.

It is no different than a "Latino All-Star Team" or an "African American All-
Star Team", etc.

TOP NEWS

Washington Nationals v Los Angeles Angels
New York Yankees v. Chicago Cubs

There were so many players to choose from that some positions were very difficult to narrow down to a finalist. But, I pushed through.

Now, I give to you, the MLB Caucasian All-Star Team of All Time

Catcher - Yogi Berra

Yogi is an easy pick for me. I know some will say Bench, and someone else will pick somebody different.

You cannot disregard three MVP awards, runner-up in two more, 18 All-star teams, and  more World Series rings (10) than anybody whoever put on a jock.

Argue if you will, but Yogi’s numbers are better well rounded than any other of all time.

First Baseman – Lou Gehrig

What can you say about Lou Gehrig? Triple Crown Winner in 1934, two MVP awards (and runner-up twice), 493 homers, 1995 knocked in and a career batting average of .340.

Lou led the league in HR’s three times and in RBI five times. He also led the
American League in hits once and  in slugging percentage twice.

I could go on and on, but it is pointless, case closed.

Second Baseman  – Rogers Hornsby

Let’s start with his two MVP awards, then move on to his batting average of .358.  Did you read that right?  Look again, .358. That is incredible for a season, let alone an entire 23 year career.

Hornsby had over 200 hits seven times, while leading the league on four occasions. He is the only two-time Triple Crown Winner in National League history (Ted Williams won two in the AL).

Rogers won seven batting titles, had the best slugging percentage nine times, had a league best OBP nine times and total bases seven times.  He was a second-baseman folks, when did they become such powerless slap-hitters?

I think I can rest my case now, my head is still spinning from those astronomical figures.

Third Baseman - George Brett

I will undoubtedly raise some eyebrows here. I will take Brett over Mike Schmidt and Eddie Mathews because his career numbers are more well rounded.

George won an MVP award, led the league in batting three times. In 1980 he batted .390.

He led the American League in hits three times, and hit over 20 homers eight times.

Brett was named to 13 All-star teams.

There you have it, he is my man for the hot corner.

Shortstop - Honus Wagner

Honus played everywhere on the field, but he is a Hall of Famer at shortstop.  He won eight batting titles, batted over .300 an incredible 16 times.

Wagner also led the league in RBI’s (as a shortstop) four times and twice in hits.

He led the National League in slugging percentage six times, and OBP four times.

Wagner played before the All-star game was implemented but I imagine he would have been  on plenty of them.

Left Fielder - Ted Williams

Teddy Ballgame won two Triple Crowns, was the last player to bat over .400 and finished with a career average of .344, and batted over .300 18 of the 19 years he played.

He led the American League in homers four times, in RBI four times, and runs scored six times.

12 times Williams had the highest OBP in the league, and led the league in slugging on nine occasions.

Ted was named to 19 All-star teams and won two MVP awards (should have won at least three).

Center Fielder -  Stan Musial

I know Stan was not considered a center fielder, especially not a prototypical one.  He was elected to three All-star teams at that position.  It was impossible for me to put Joltin’ Joe in here and leave Stan Musial out.

Stan belongs on anyone’s “all-anything” team.

Stan ‘The Man” Musial won three MVP awards and was runner-up four more.

He finished with an average of .331 with 475 HR’s and 1951 RBI, and led the league in runs scored five times.

Musial won seven batting titles, and batted over .300 eighteen times. He led the National League in hits six times and he had over 200 hits on six different occasions.

Stan led in OBP six times, and in slugging percentage six times.

He was named to a Major League best, 24 All-star teams.

Right Fielder - Babe Ruth

No surprises here.  In many people’s eyes, Babe Ruth is the best baseball player who ever lived. 714 career homers, 2217 RBI, 2873 hits and 2174 runs scored.

He also had a lifetime average of .342. Three times he had over 200 hits and yet never led the league in that category.

Ruth led the league in OBP 10 times and in slugging an amazing 13 times.

Babe led the American League in HR’s 12 times, in RBI six times, and won one batting title.

Ruth was the American League MVP in 1923.

Right Handed Pitcher - Cy Young

Many different selections could be made here. I mean none of us saw Cy pitch and don’t know that much about him.

But folks, when you have a guy with 511 wins, you got to run him out there. Know what I mean?

He had a very good ERA of 2.63 and has the most prestigious pitching award named after him. Can anyone else in the annals say this?  I don’t think so.

Cy was a 30-game winner five times, won 20 nine more, and led the league in wins five times.

Five times Young pitched over 400 innings. That is just phenomenal.

He also pitched over 40 complete games five times. What a workhorse. The man was a stud.

On six occasions he had an ERA under .

I don’t think I need to justify this pick any further.

Left Handed Pitcher - Warren Spahn

Here we go again. Koufax, Grove, Plank, etc.

Listen, if I already picked Spahn as the best left-handed pitcher in history, how can I not say he is the greatest Caucasian pitcher ever?

Warren won a career best (for southpaws) 363 games, and finished with a very respectable 3.09 ERA.

Spahn won 20 games thirteen times and led the league in wins eight times.  He won one Cy Young award and was runner-up in the voting three times.

Spahn pitched 63 shutouts and led the National League in strikeouts four times.

There you have it fans. The best Caucasian team ever assembled. I know there will be a billion differences of opinion but that is what makes the world go round.
