The One Deadline Move Each Team's Fanbase Most Wants to See Made
With the 2013 NBA trade deadline rapidly approaching, all 30 NBA franchises are set to be involved in some capacity. This has the league on edge as fans everywhere contemplate what their organizations may opt to do.
If the fans had it their way, however, the following slides would outline what deals their respective franchises would and would not execute.
For some, the acquisition of a star is too attractive an opportunity to pass up. For others, the idea of losing their youth is just too troubling to approve of a potential swap.
So, where are the 30 NBA team fanbases standing on trades?
Atlanta Hawks: Josh Smith Re-Signs or Leaves
1 of 30Atlanta Hawks fans are well-aware of the fact that, from a statistical standpoint, Josh Smith is elite.
They're also quite acquainted with a truth that I've been stating for quite some time.
Smith is an elite second option and an average star player. For that reason, the Hawks would love to see this never-ending saga end.
Note from the fans to the Hawks: either re-sign Smith now or send him out to acquire quality pieces for the future.
Just stop wasting time:
"Hawks have convinced numerous teams that Josh Smith will be moved between now and Thursday 3 PM deadline. Question remains where exactly
— Marc Stein (@ESPNSteinLine) February 19, 2013"
Let's see if this report holds true.
Boston Celtics: Acquire Josh Smith
2 of 30You're going to see a lot of this.
According to Gery Woelfel of The Journal Times, the Boston Celtics are open to a deal for Josh Smith that would include Brandon Bass and Jeff Green.
Smith would provide the dominant interior presence and elite athleticism that Boston has long needed.
Celtics fans would likely be upset with seeing Green go, but assuming Danny Ainge could re-sign Smith, that pain might be soothed.
This is the only fathomable deal that Boston fans would agree upon—trading Kevin Garnett or Paul Pierce just doesn't seem to appealing.
Brooklyn Nets: Acquisition of Josh Smith
3 of 30According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, the Brooklyn Nets are "solely focused" on making a deal for Josh Smith of the Atlanta Hawks.
Their most recently reported offer proposed MarShon Brooks and Kris Humphries end up in Atlanta.
Acquiring a borderline All-Star and getting rid of a role player's $12 million salary? That's a win-win for Brooklyn (via ESPN New York).
It's also unlikely to transpire if those are the pieces included.
It's quite likely that the Nets are forced to offer something they didn't want to give up. Even if that were the case, there's no denying how much better of a team they'd be with Smith on the roster.
Consider the Nets to be a B-list superteam with the depth to truly contend.
Charlotte Bobcats: Send Ben Gordon Packing
4 of 30According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, Charlotte Bobcats shooting guard Ben Gordon recently clashed with head coach Mike Dunlap.
The spat now has the organization pushing aggressively to trade the 29-year-old and the $13.2 million he's owed owed in 2013-14.
Bobcats fans can't help but share management's desires.
Gordon is shooting 40.9 percent from beyond the arc, but he's also a locker room distraction.
Charlotte's youth needs a veteran they can pattern themselves after. They need a true leader and an honorable mentor.
Gordon hasn't proven to be such while playing in Charlotte.
Chicago Bulls: Acquire J.J. Redick
5 of 30The Chicago Bulls currently rank 24th in three-point field-goal percentage and 29th in three-point field goals made per game.
Help could be on the way for Chicago, as Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld.com reports that the Bulls are looking to acquire the sharpshooting J.J. Redick of the Orlando Magic.
A deal that would placate Bulls fans and offer a significant improvement over the team's current group of shooters.
The only question at this point is what's taking them so long?
Cleveland Cavaliers: Hold On to Mo Speights
6 of 30According to Marc Stein of ESPN, the Cleveland Cavaliers could trade Marreese Speights before the deadline passes.
Less than a month after Cleveland acquired Speights via a trade from the Memphis Grizzlies (via ESPN).
If it were up to Cavs fans, they'd keep Speights in town and let the smooth-shooting big man develop alongside rookie Tyler Zeller.
It may only be 10 games, but Speights is averaging 13 points and 6.4 rebounds in 22.2 minutes since joining the Cavs.
Unless the deal is franchise-altering, it would be a good idea to abide by the fans' wishes and give Speights time.
Dallas Mavericks: Acquire a Point Guard
7 of 30Darren Collison is having a solid season running point for the Dallas Mavericks.
Thus far in 2012-13, Collison is averaging 12.9 points, 5.5 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game.
He's also posting a slash line of .485/.393/.900.
With that being said, the Mavericks don't want solid at point guard. At 23-29, the Mavs need elite.
Dallas fans would certainly be thrilled if the Mavericks could swing a trade to acquire a star point guard. This could go a long way to complete their late-season push to make it to the postseason.
Then again, we could all soon eat our words—Collison is averaging 16.7 points, nine assists and 4.7 rebounds over his past three games.
Denver Nuggets: Bring in J.J. Redick
8 of 30This is neither the first nor last time that you will see this man's name.
According to Sam Amico of Fox Sports Ohio, the Denver Nuggets are interested in acquiring sharpshooter J.J. Redick.
The potential arrival of Redick would be expected to improve what is already the league's third-ranked scoring offense.
This is a move that Nuggets fans appear to be in favor of. As long as the cost is reasonable, Redick would do nothing but improve the half-court offense with his shooting ability.
Denver currently ranks 24th in three-point field-goal percentage.
Detroit Pistons: Keep Will Bynum in Detroit
9 of 30According to Chris Sheridan of SheridanHoops.com, the Detroit Pistons could potentially send Will Bynum to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Eric Maynor.
Considering Bynum is a local fan favorite, it's unlikely that the supporters of the Pistons would be in favor of seeing him walk.
To placate the passionate fans in Detroit, keep Bynum around. It's as simple as that.
Golden State Warriors: Keep Their Youth
10 of 30According to Marcus Thompson of the Bay Area News Group, the Golden State Warriors inquired about trading for Eric Gordon.
When they learned that the potential deal would require giving up Klay Thompson and Harrison Barnes, however, they stepped away.
That's exactly what fans want them to do.
Barnes and Thompson are young and riddled with upside. To trade them away would be premature and detrimental to a potentially elite perimeter.
Fortunately for Warriors fans, Gordon's injury history scared upper management away.
Houston Rockets: Stand Pat at the Deadline
11 of 30According to Sam Amick of USA Today, Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey is prepared for a quiet trade deadline.
Rockets fans wouldn't have it any other way.
Houston is a young team with loads of offensive firepower. They're also a team that, for the most part, had never played together before this season.
James Harden, Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik were all playing for other teams in 2011-12. They're all starters now.
Taking a break from the trade talks and focusing on personnel development is the most appealing move for Houston fans.
Indiana Pacers: Trade for J.J. Redick
12 of 30Per Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld.com, the Indiana Pacers are pursuing a trade for J.J. Redick of the Orlando Magic.
This is a rational attempt to improve the NBA's 28th-ranked scoring offense.
Not only would Redick improve their perimeter shooting, but he'd also provide the presence of a ball-handler and facilitator.
Redick is averaging career-bests of 15.3 points and 4.4 assists while posting a slash line of .459/.403/.887.
To say that Redick would improve Indiana's abysmal offense would be a drastic understatement.
Los Angeles Clippers: Keep Eric Bledsoe Around
13 of 30Adrian Wojnarowski and Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports report that the Los Angeles Clippers and Boston Celtics have engaged in talks for a potential trade.
The deal would be focused on Eric Bledsoe going to Boston and Kevin Garnett ending up in Los Angeles.
According to Ramona Shelburne and Marc Stein of ESPN Los Angeles, the Clippers and Utah Jazz are exploring a potential Bledsoe for Paul Millsap swap.
If it were up to Clippers fans, the rumors would cut off and Bledsoe would remain a Clipper for the remainder of the season.
Here's hoping that the front office obliges.
Los Angeles Lakers: Gain a Decision from Dwight Howard
14 of 30According to Sam Amick of USA Today, the Los Angeles Lakers are showing no signs of willingness to trade Dwight Howard.
Unfortunately, Howard is providing no guarantee that he will re-sign with the franchise come the offseason.
Whether the Lakers decide to trade or commit to Howard, they must make their intentions clear. More importantly, they must pursue Howard's decision.
The fans are torn between supporting D-12 and begging him to leave—and Howard knows that it's a result of his not committing to re-signing (via the Los Angeles Times).
Make a decision.
Miami Heat: Acquire Timofey Mozgov
15 of 30Christopher Dempsey of The Denver Post reports that the Miami Heat are one of many teams interested in Denver Nuggets center Timofey Mozgov.
Even with the recent addition of Chris Andersen, this is a move that would certainly improve Miami's suspect interior.
The Russian big man is 7'1" and 250 pounds. Despite the jokes surrounding his tendency to get dunked on, he's also a quality inside presence.
One that the Heat could certainly benefit from acquiring.
In a recent poll, 88.9 percent of voters said Miami should pursue Mozgov.
Memphis Grizzlies: Add a Shooter
16 of 30If the Memphis Grizzlies do nothing at all, there's a good chance that the Memphis Grizzlies and their fanbase will be content.
After all, they have executed two trades already.
With that being said, Grizzlies fans would be nothing short of enamored with the potential of adding a floor-spacing shooter.
After all, Memphis ranks dead last in three-point field goals made per game.
Even still, moving forward with their current defensive powerhouse seems like an attractive prospect.
Milwaukee Bucks: Land J.J. Redick
17 of 30According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, J.J. Redick would be a top target for the Milwaukee Bucks should they move a starting guard.
Ken Berger of CBS Sports reports that Milwaukee has already offered Luc Richard Mbah a Moute and a first-round draft choice for Redick.
If the Bucks were to land the sharpshooter, the fanbase would have to be pleased.
They'd have a consistent floor-spacing shooter with respectable facilitating abilities. They'd also add a veteran to a rather young team.
This potential deal may not push them into title contention, but Milwaukee could placate their fanbase by getting it done.
As for a Josh Smith trade, fans appear uneasy about the potential of needing to include Larry Sanders.
Minnesota Timberwolves: Any Form of Help
18 of 30According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, the Minnesota Timberwolves are offering multiple first-round draft picks on the trade market.
All Minnesota wants in return is established talent and, potentially, a star to help Ricky Rubio and Kevin Love bring this franchise out of the gutter.
It's hard to imagine any fan opposing the potential for a brighter tomorrow.
Love is on the brink of missing out on yet another postseason appearance. With that being said, he's also sidelined by a broken hand (via USA Today).
What better way to get Love to approve of the near-future in Minnesota than to have him return to star surroundings?
New Orleans Hornets: Hold on to Eric Gordon
19 of 30According to Chris Broussard of ESPN Insider, there are trade whispers surrounding Eric Gordon of the New Orleans Hornets.
For the sake of fans everywhere, this never-ending saga of "Is Gordon a Hornet?" needs to end immediately.
From injuries to opposing offer sheets, Hornets fans have been caught up in the misery of uncertainty.
Just as Gordon appears to be ready to return for the second half of the season, trade rumors sprout.
It's time the front office makes it perfectly clear that Gordon is going nowhere.
New York Knicks: Hold on to Iman Shumpert
20 of 30Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports and Chris Sheridan of SheridanHoops.com have both reported that Iman Shumpert is a subject for trade talks.
Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld.com is the latest to relay information of a potential trade involving the high-top defensive specialist.
If it were up to Knicks fans, the only move New York would make at the trade deadline would be to hold on to Shumpert.
He's their top perimeter defender and one of the most popular players on the team. Most importantly, he's their only player younger than 27.
Trading Shumpert is a route few Knicks fans would approve of following.
Oklahoma City Thunder: Trade for Will Bynum
21 of 30Chris Sheridan of SheridanHoops.com reports that Will Bynum is a primary target of the Oklahoma City Thunder approaching the trade deadline.
Bynum is currently averaging 9.3 points and 3.8 assists in 18.4 minutes of action per game.
The acquisition of Bynum would significantly strengthen a rather weak second unit.
Bynum's speed and quickness would open up the court in ways the Thunder's current reserve point guards can't.
Keep in mind, OKC ranks 17th or worse in second unit scoring, efficiency and defensive efficiency.
Bynum would be a dream acquisition for the Thunder.
Orlando Magic: Keep J.J. Redick
22 of 30The unanimous voice in Orlando has been relatively surprising.
Through all of the trade rumblings, fans of the Orlando Magic would prefer to see J.J. Redick stay with the team.
Redick appears to share that sentiment.
According to Brian Schmitz of the Orlando Sentinel, Redick and his wife "love it" in Orlando. Their preference is to stay put.
With or without a trade, that's a refreshing change of scenery for the Magic.
Philadelphia 76ers: Fix Bynum's Knees and Keep Evan Turner
23 of 30First and foremost, Philadelphia 76ers fans are anxiously awaiting the day that Andrew Bynum's knees are ruled healthy enough for game activity.
Until then, they'll have to focus on keeping Evan Turner in Philadelphia.
Per John N. Mitchell of The Philadelphia Inquirer, the Sixers fielded a call regarding a potential trade for Josh Smith. The deal would see Turner and Spencer Hawes shipped to the Atlanta Hawks.
As well as Smith is playing, he's also an unrestricted free agent.
Turner, meanwhile, has become a local favorite in Philadelphia. His work ethic and versatility have some believing he will meet his draft potential.
Without a signed extension, it's unlikely that Sixers fans would want to see Smith come in to replace Turner.
Phoenix Suns: Trade Sebastian Telfair
24 of 30When the Phoenix Suns selected Kendall Marshall with the 13th pick in the 2012 NBA draft, many labeled him as the heir apparent to Steve Nash.
Unfortunately, veteran point guard Sebastian Telfair continues to command playing time.
As a result, Marshall's minutes have been limited.
Fortunately for Suns fans, Chris Broussard of ESPN reports that Phoenix is attempting to trade Telfair to free up time for Marshall.
If that transpires, Phoenix will be a very happy basketball city.
Portland Trail Blazers: Improve the Bench
25 of 30As of the All-Star break, the Portland Trail Blazers rank last in bench scoring, efficiency and defensive efficiency.
In other words, Portland's second unit has been horrendous—a major reason fatigue has hindered their starters.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, the Trail Blazers are attempting to cure those woes by trading double-double machine J.J. Hickson.
Blazers fans are unlikely to approve of a deal involving Hickson. With that being said, they know how desperate this team is for depth.
A painful departure for a teamwide improvement.
Sacramento Kings: Agree to Stay in Sacramento
26 of 30The never-ending saga of the Sacramento Kings' potential move to Seattle, Washington, continues to rage on.
A Seattle group fronted by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and hedge fund manager Chris Hansen agreed to a deal to acquire the Kings in January (via ESPN).
Most recently, NBA commissioner David Stern stated that it's "certainly plausible" that the Kings remain in Sacramento (via ESPN).
The only move Kings fans want this trade deadline is a final decision—one way or another.
San Antonio Spurs: Trade for Al Jefferson, Keep Kawhi Leonard
27 of 30According to Chris Sheridan of SheridanHoops.com, the San Antonio Spurs are the front-runners to land upcoming free agent Al Jefferson in a trade via the Utah Jazz.
As long as the asking price is fair to San Antonio's youth—specifically the ability to hold on to Kawhi Leonard—Spurs fans would love to see Big Al hit San Antonio.
The other 29 teams would simply dread being forced to square off with an interior tandem of Jefferson and Tim Duncan.
Can you really think of a reason to not acquire Jefferson?
As long as Kawhi Leonard stays in town, that seems like the ideal move for Spurs fans everywhere.
Toronto Raptors: Keep Bargnani Until the Summer
28 of 30This may be the toughest team to pinpoint.
Half of the Toronto Raptors fanbase appears dead set on trading Andrea Bargnani.
The other half appears to believe that the former No. 1 overall draft choice can develop into the star he was expected to be.
So where do we go from here?
In the long-term, fans are more likely to approve of seeing Bargnani remain in Toronto until the offseason.
Per Doug Smith of the Toronto Sun, the Raptors are likely to wait until the summer.
It's funny how things work out.
With Rudy Gay now in town, the Raptors have the potential for a legitimate star pairing. The question is, will a borderline elite perimeter player be able to push Bargnani over the edge?
Utah Jazz: Paul Millsap for Eric Bledsoe
29 of 30According to Ramona Shelburne and Marc Stein of ESPN Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Clippers and Utah Jazz share mutual interest in a potential borderline-blockbuster trade.
The deal would see Paul Millsap and his expiring contract go to Los Angeles.
In return, the Jazz would fill their point guard void with 23-year-old rising star Eric Bledsoe.
Calling this a dream deal for Utah would be a disturbing understatement.
Millsap's departure would open the door for Derrick Favors to crack the starting lineup at power forward. Keeping Millsap would simply delay the inevitable.
Most important of all, acquiring Bledsoe would give Utah their first franchise point guard since Deron Williams.
A true win-win for the Jazz.
Washington Wizards: Land Josh Smith
30 of 30Really? Really.
Chris Broussard of ESPN reports that the Atlanta Hawks and Washington Wizards have been in talks in reference to a Josh Smith trade.
Let's take a quick pause before Wizards fans say, "So we give up quality players for a guy who may not re-sign?"
Broussard reports that John Wall, Bradley Beal and Nene have been labeled as off-limits for trade talks.
In other words, Smith would enter a situation with a rising star at point guard, a sharpshooter at the 2 and a respected veteran along the interior.
Plus, Washington would be able to offer him more money than anyone else.
It's about taking calculated risks at the trade deadline, and giving up role players for Smith would be a dream swap.
Regardless of the eventual outcome.
