Dysfunctional D'backs Drop Another One

Jabber HeadApr 9, 2009

We are three games in. It seems like so much more.

The charade is already getting old. Poor hitting, poor pitching, and throw in some late game poor defense, and you have the recipe for a bad team. It is a marathon, but if this keeps up, this may be the longest marathon the D’backs have ever run.

The Colorado Rockies came to Chase Field and defeated the D'backs on Wednesday afternoon 9-2, taking two of three in the series. From the very first pitch, there was trouble—Rockies center fielder Dexter Fowler hit a ball into the left field stands off of starter Doug Davis (0-1), a.k.a. Human Rain Delay Jr. in the first.

Davis gave up four runs and four hits in five innings. He wasn’t terribly bad, but not anything special either.

The bullpen failed the D’backs and their fans once again, though. Reliever Jon Rausch got in long enough to raise his ERA again. When are they going to get the memo on this guy? Maybe they are waiting until his ERA is higher than his age? Billy Buckner was bad and even Tony Pena was not immune from giving up two runs, although they were both unearned, thanks to D’back errors.

At the plate, it is no better. The D’backs only got one player past first base after the first inning, and that was Chris Young, who scored in the ninth after being hit by a pitch, taking second on the catcher’s indifference (the dumbest rule in the book), then finally reaching home plate on two ground outs.

Justin Upton looks like he is guessing at the plate. The rest of the D’backs just plain had some bad at-bats on Wednesday. If this keeps up, it will get old really quick. It’s early, but you can’t say that forever.

Player of the game: Franklin Morales, Colorado. Morales pitched a very nice game, obviously had the D’backs guessing all day, and kept them off balance and at bay for six solid innings of work.

It was over when: The first pitch was thrown. Davis gave up a quick roundtripper, and although the D’backs tied it in the bottom of the inning with Stephen Drew’s HR, they were never really in it yesterday.
