UFC Fight Night Results and Recap: Martin Kampmann Decisions Carlos Condit

Josh NasonApr 1, 2009

Martin Kampmann spoiled the UFC debut of Carlos Condit and several 155-pounders made big statements as the UFC kicked off the month of April with an Ultimate Fight Night event from Nashville, TN, on Wednesday night.

Kampmann earned a split decision over Condit on the main event while Cole Miller, Tyson Griffin and Ryan Bader all took home victories - some more lopsided than others.

For the entire running recap full of results and analysis, read on for the Ropes Ring and Cage recap of UFC Ultimate Fight Night 18 here on Bleacher Report:

- Cole Miller (15-3) def. Junie Browning (3-2) by submission at 1:58 of the first round

Finally, pre-fight interviews that help sell a fight! Both Miller and Browning were great in their camera time with Miller calling Browning a "douche with stupid hair and tattoos." AWESOME. Browning really wasn't that heavily booed pre-fight, so people have either a) moved on or b) have no idea who Browning is.

Miller is so tall and lanky, yet only has a one-inch reach advantage on Browning. Miller hit some punches but was focused on taking Browning down. End came when Miller sunk in a guillotine choke, forcing Browning to tap with 3:03 left in the first.

Miller had some words for Browning after ("Who's overrated now?") and didn't acknowledge him post-fight. This 155-pound division is getting quite stacked. Miller wants the winner of Caol Uno vs. Spencer Fisher.

Between the UFC video packages, commercials and fighter shoutouts, the memory of Charles "Mask" Lewis is all over this show. Too bad Joe Rogan got cut off mid-sentence by the commercials after the video package aired.

- Tyson Griffin (13-2) def. Rafael Dos Anjos (11-4) via unanimous decision.

Round One: Griffin has an interesting sponsor: Zappos. They're a huge brand, so why Griffin? Both men are swinging early...I don't think we're going to see a lot of ground game in this one.

Of course a minute after I type that, the fight eventually goes to the ground and Dos Anjos hooks in one of the coolest leg-lock submission attempts I've ever seen. He had Griffin's leg completely torqued behind his body. Fun first round—Dos Anjos 1-0.

Round Two: Both men want to connect with the other's jaw very badly. Griffin is pressing the action for most of the round, but Dos Anjos almost catches him in an nasty standing armbar. I keep having this feeling that Griffin is going to connect any second now and lay Dos Anjos out. I'll give this one to Griffin as he was pressing and connecting.

Round Three: Griffin keeps asking Dos Anjos to come at him, but I don't know if I'd want to get near his fists either. More of the same from Round Two with Dos Anjos nearly sinking in a deep kimura at the end of the round. That might have given it to him...I'll give the point to Dos Anjos in a really fun fight.

Judges botched this one, all scoring the bout 30-27 for Griffin. I could see a split, but there is no way Griffin won that first round. Can any of these judges be considered competent?

(Bader vs. Marrero and Kampmann vs. Condit on Page 2)

- Ryan Bader (10-0) def. Carmelo Marrero (10-3-0-1) by unanimous decision

Round One: Bader took Marrero down early with ease and was looking for a kimura...Spike didn't have a time clock up for some reason through the first 4:15 of the round, which was surprisingly disarming from a viewer standpoint.

Are they experimenting? If so, I didn't like it. Bader dominated the round on the ground, earning the duke.

Round Two: Halfway through, this match is so bland that I'm focusing on how cool Bader's arm tattoo is to stay interested....Marrero is clearly overmatched, but Bader isn't experienced enough to finish him off....Crowd is starting to boo at the 1:50 mark...Bader takes the second round easy, but good lord, this is frustrating to watch.

Round Three: Zzzzzzzzzzz. Bader's got a great look and this is his first shot post-The Ultimate Fighter so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, but this was boring as hell. I don't see Marrero lasting that much longer as he did next-to-nothing in this fight.

They did a pre-taped interview with Chuck Liddell. Nothing ground-breaking here, but Liddell needs to win and win convincingly in order to stay relevant in the Light Heavyweight division.

- Martin Kampmann (15-2) def. Carlos Condit (23-5) by split decision.

Round One: Condit just looks ready for this moment...he could be a huge draw by the end of '09 if he can pull off some big and exciting wins. At the 4:00 mark, Kampmann sunk in a deep guillotine that Condit was able to survive, escape and then get partial mount on.

Around the 1:45 mark, Kampmann locked in a heel hook but Condit escaped. Kampmann got cut below his left eye and then got rocked by a Condit knee after he got up from the canvas. I'll give Kampmann the round.

Round Two: A lot of back-and-forth with Kampmann trying for punches and Condit looking to go down. The only problem is that Kampmann kept locking on guillotine chokes but Condit was able to reverse. This was a tough round to judge, but I'll say Condit...barely.

Round Three: Kampann is just dominating Condit, keeping him on the ground and essentially nullified. Condit is game with trying to lock on submissions from all positions, but he just ran out of steam in Round Three—even though he did sink in a deep guillotine at the end of Round Three.

This is going to be an interesting decision. I have Kampmann winning two rounds to one.

All judges had it 29-28 with two going for Kampmann.
