Madrid, Chelsea, Barca, United: Could This Be Liverpool's Greatest Ever Victory?

Jamie WardMar 26, 2009

It looks like the road to Rome will be a very difficult one to manoeuvre for Rafa Benitez and his in-form Liverpool team, with three mouth watering fixtures that could yet prove to be his greatest managerial achievement to date.

The final draw is complete and all eight clubs left in the competition can now see the path they have to take and the teams they will have to beat in order to take home the 2008-09 Champions League trophy.

Real Madrid: 5-0

The Game against Madrid was the first time the two teams had faced each other in a European competition since 1981. The final in Paris saw Liverpool claim the trophy with a 1-0 triumph.

Despite the predictions of a "defensive" Rafa being steamrollered by his highflying Spanish counterpart, Juande Ramos, in this season's campaign, Liverpool managed five goals without answer over the two legs and gave Madrid their heaviest defeat in the competition.

Chelsea

This will be the fourth time the Liverpool manager has faced Chelsea in the Champions League knockout phase since he took charge of the club in 2004, with the two sides were also paired together in the group stages of the 2005-06 campaign.

The eight encounters between the two clubs have normally been slowpaced, edgy stalemates that produce very little goals. Despite Liverpool's rampant 15 goals in four games there is still the possibility of a repeat performance in the up and coming fixture.

Barcelona

The La Liga favourites are possibly awaiting Liverpool in the semifinals, but the dazzling attacking talents from Spain will have to overcome their own hurdle in the form of Bayern Munich—who managed to put 12 goals past Sporting Lisbon in their recent Champions League tie.

Liverpool have already faced Barca in a previous campaign when they were paired together in the first knockout game of the 2006-07 season. Once again Liverpool were the underdogs yet still managed to make it through to the next round with a 2-2 away goals victory.

Manchester United

If Liverpool manage to beat the odds and navigate their way to the final in Rome, they could possibly face the current Champions League title holders—who are also the current favourites to retain the cup.

The Premier League champions have the slightly easier side of this season's draw with Arsenal, Villareal, and Porto to contend with before reaching the final.

After an impressive 4-1 victory at Old Trafford, Liverpool have proven they have the ability to beat the current English, European and World club Champions. However, there is no denying the amazing capabilities of Manchester United and the game could still go either way.

With a very difficult Premier League campaign still to fight for, Rafa Benitez has a very difficult couple of months to contend with if he has any hope of bringing home another cup to Merseyside.

If his team does manage to claim either the Premier League or Champions League trophy this season, there is no doubt what ever trophy he does bring home, it will be his greatest victory to date.
