Alex Ferguson: No Quintuple, and Still No Retirement
Alex Ferguson has dismissed his side’s chances of an unprecedented five trophies this season whilst maintaining he is working with his best ever squad of players.
In an interview published in the New Statesman, Ferguson said:
“The thing about cup football is you need to be the best, but you also need a lot of luck and I think it’s asking too much for all the games to go your way.

“The one thing I will say is, this squad is the best I have ever had. Every game we play, I feel confident.”
Manchester United currently hold a four point lead over Liverpool and Chelsea in the Premier League with a game in hand and are through to the quarter finals of the Champions League.
United have also successfully navigated their way to the FA Cup semi-finals with the promise of either Arsenal or Chelsea in the final should they see off the challenge of Everton.
Having already landed the Club World Cup and the Carling Cup, mathematically at least, winning five trophies is a distinct possibility but as Ferguson says, all too often in football, games are decided by that little bit of luck. Still, we have the team for it so that’s a very good start.
Ferguson was once again asked whether he had any plans of retirement:
“Not for a while,” was his response. “I’m 67 now. My health’s good. I still have the drive and the energy. I’ve been here more than 22 years, but I still get a buzz arriving at the training ground. I still get that tingle when the team bus draws up at an away ground before a big match.”
Pushed whether that meant another year or two he replied: “That kind of area. We’ll see.”
