The Indiana Pacers' Top Training Camp Storylines

Mike B.Jun 2, 2018

There hasn’t been a ton of big time stories associated with the Indiana Pacers’ training camp this year.

Danny Granger and George Hill are a little bit banged up, but they should be just fine once the regular season rolls around.

Indiana's starting five is basically set in stone, as the team will go with the same unit from last season—Granger, David West, Roy Hibbert, Hill and Paul George. With that said, no one is currently battling for a starting spot.

However, the bench is a different story, with a few players attempting to either make the roster or simply grab a specific role.

Here are five of the Pacers' top training camp storylines.

Danny Granger's Health

1 of 5

Pacers forward Danny Granger suffered a knee injury during last season's playoff series with the Miami Heat.

He later hurt the knee again while training in Los Angeles towards the end of the summer.

The injury isn't considered a major issue, but the Pacers have chosen to bring Granger along slowly. Actually, he hasn't appeared in any of the team's three preseason games thus far.

Granger is expected to suit up for the Pacers when the club opens the regular season on the road against the Toronto Raptors.

Indiana is going to need a healthy Granger if they want to reach the Eastern Conference finals this season.

George Hill's Health

Like Danny Granger, George Hill is yet to play a preseason game.

The Pacers are resting the Indianapolis native, who is nursing a sore thumb.

Thankfully, Hill, the Pacers' starting point guard, should be ready to go for the regular season—you know, when games really matter.

He is entering his second season in Indy and is undoubtedly one of the most important pieces on the roster.

Fans in the Hoosier state are certainly hoping that Hill can stay injury-free.

Battle for the Backup Power Forward Spot

3 of 5

Following a legendary career at North Carolina, Tyler Hansbrough has blossomed into the Pacers' top backup power forward.

However, "Psycho T" may wind up losing his spot to the much lesser-known Jeff Pendergraph if he isn't careful.

Hansbrough brings hustle and energy to the table, while Pendergraph is the better of the two at finishing in the paint.

This is perhaps the most notable position battle in training camp, although Hansbrough will likely retain his role with the team.

Can Miles Plumlee Crack the Rotation?

4 of 5

Indiana selected big man Miles Plumlee with the 26th overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft.

The former Duke Blue Devil was expecting to be Roy Hibbert's primary backup at center this season.

However, that was before the Pacers acquired Ian Mahinmi in the deal that sent Darren Collison to the Dallas Mavericks in July.

Plumlee will look for playing time in 2012-13. The 6'11", 250-pounder possesses an excellent motor and brings solid rebounding to the lineup.

The question is can he crack coach Frank Vogel's rotation? Stay tuned.

Will Ben Hansbrough Make the Team?

5 of 5

Who's Ben Hansbrough? Is he by chance related to Pacers forward Tyler Hansbrough? Yes, they're actually brothers.

Ben appeared in five games for the Pacers' summer league team this year and was also invited to training camp.

The Notre Dame product has played in all three of the team's preseason games, averaging 5.7 points and four assists per contest.

In the second preseason game—a win versus Minnesota—Hansbrough produced 10 points and seven assists, which isn't bad for an undrafted player.

We'll have to see if he makes the Pacers' regular season roster and officially becomes a teammate of his older brother.

If he does end up earning a spot, Hansbrough can emerge as a decent third-string point guard behind George Hill and D.J. Augustin.
