Manchester United v. Inter Milan: Will the Red Devils Make It Through?

Scott BMar 9, 2009

As the second leg fixtures of this round's Champions League draw near, we begin to ponder who will make it through to the next round.

With Chelsea, Liverpool, and Arsenal all registering first leg victories against Juventus, Real Madrid, and Roma respectively. We now turn to United's daunting task ahead.

Manchester United and Inter drew 0-0 in the first leg of the fixture in Italy. Although the Red Devils dominated most of the match, they were unable to find that crucial away goal that would have set them up perfectly for the return leg at Old Trafford.

Heading into the match at Old Trafford on Wednesday, Inter have nothing to lose and will most likely play with an attacking mind set. On the other hand, Manchester United must win the match to progress. A loss or a draw will see them get knocked out of the competition.

With the threat of Rio Ferdinand being unfit, along with Wes Brown, Owen Hargreaves, Rafael, and more, the possibility looms that Jonny Evans will again have to slot in next to Nemanja Vidic in the defence.

Patrice Evra is back to full fitness and will be very helpful with his pace at the back to run down Ibrahamovich. The right back spot may be an issue with Rafael being out, and Gary Neville not back to full fitness. John O'Shea may be the starter for that role.

In the midfield, we may see Ryan Giggs making a start as experience could be vital in a game like this. Ronaldo will start on the right and probably Ji-Sung Park on the left with his ultra high work rate and determination.

Up the front, Rooney should make a start. The other spot will be a hard one for Sir Alex as he weighs up either Dimitar Berbatov or Carlos Tevez. The high flying Argentinian slotted a brace in the weekend against Fulham and could well be picked ahead of Berbatov.

But it is not just United with injury problems.

Inter will probably have to field a reshuffled back four with Materazzi, Chivu, Samuel, and Burdisso all doubtful. The one most likely of the four to return is Samuel and possibly Burdisso.

Both United and Inter are well ahead in there national leagues, and both full of confidence. On the night, the result will probably go to the team that wants it the most.

I would be saying that will be United.
