WWE: Speculating on CM Punk's Confrontation with Ryback on Raw
I am between opinions right now.
Right from the start, I have to say that the popular response in this situation is undoubtedly to overreact. Ryback stared down the WWE Champion, eye to eye, and Punk actually looked afraid of him. He did such a good job of selling the moment, he was perhaps just a bit too over the top, but he did get the point across.
It’s only natural to take that moment, and assume that Ryback is headed for the big time against Punk, right?

After all, he is undefeated, and has torn through WWE one squash match at a time. From the moment it all began, fans have almost immediately begun asking when and if the company would take him to the next level. He seems built to make an impact on the championship scene.
It makes perfect sense.
However, from another perspective, there is nothing about Ryback versus CM Punk that even remotely has any logic attached to it.
So, Ryback has crushed dozens of workers in handicap matches. So what?
Squash matches are traditionally used to showcase a guy’s talents, but the truth is, many fans have been so busy totally disregarding Ryback that they haven’t really even noticed what he’s doing, or how he’s doing it. To them, he’s just another jacked up guy who has a very aggressive style, and as a result, he is just your average cookie cutter WWE Superstar.
For Ryback to go from zero to 60 overnight, is just not believable. He barely scratched the surface of a feud with the Miz, which could have been very good for him, but he went over in their first match together.
That is simply not enough for Ryback to be considered a legitimate threat to CM Punk’s WWE Championship.
What has my curiosity truly piqued is the fact that nothing was revealed during Punk and Ryback’s confrontation on Raw. Yes, Ryback was intense and scary as he stood over a helpless Mick Foley. Yes, Punk played his part perfectly, showing fear and uncertainty as he stared down the bald bruiser.
But does that mean they are truly at odds?
What are the chances that the spot could lead to a swerve, with perhaps Ryback being hired by Paul Heyman as a bodyguard for Punk—an insurance policy against anyone who believes they could dethrone the champ?
Or does Ryback deserve even that much spotlight, considering he cannot seem to get over based upon his own individual efforts? Would the crowd suddenly take him seriously if he were a client of Heyman’s?
Again, there are many points to consider, and while we all attempt to figure this out, one thing is for certain.
John Cena will be at Hell in a Cell. This is not an event that WWE would allow him to miss, and despite whether or not he faces CM Punk, he could still make an impact.
But, would that impact be to assist Ryback in winning the WWE Title? Or, will the impact be made at Cena’s expense, with Ryback squashing him, as he has to so many others?
Your guess is as good as mine. But truth be told, that’s the way it should be. This is WWE, where anything can happen. And this situation is no different.
