Manny Pacquiao: Tim Bradley Trainer Joel Diaz Rips Pac-Man
With this week's official announcement of a fourth bout between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez, at least one potential Pacquiao suitor was left out in the cold.
And Timothy Bradley's trainer, Joel Diaz, for one, is fed up with the Pac-Man's dismissive attitude towards his fighter.
“If there was a rematch, Tim would make it more decisive,” Diaz told Ryan Maquiñana of BoxingScene.com
“Manny Pacquiao, he’s already on his way out. He’s not the Pacquiao of three or four years ago. There’s a lot of wear and tear already.”
Diaz was speaking in response to previous comments from Pacquiao in which he dismissed the prospect of facing Bradley again (via Yahoo!):
"I have nothing to prove against Bradley," Pacquiao said. Everyone saw who won the fight. If we fought again it would be one-sided."
The overwhelming majority of boxing fans and media who saw the June fight between Pacquiao and Bradley would agree with at least the second part of that assessment.
Bradley was awarded a highly controversial split-decision, that was panned by many as one of, if not the, worst decision in the history of the sport. With the win, Bradley captured the WBO Welterweight Championship.
And that, if you listen to Diaz, is exactly why Bradley should be getting the fight over Marquez.
“Boxing is a business, and in my opinion, Manny’s going the easy way,” he said in the interview with BoxingScene.com. “He’s going around Tim to fight Marquez, who’s 40 years old and didn’t even look good in his last fight."
“If you’re a champion, and somebody takes something away from you, and you think that they didn’t take it away from you the right way, you know what, let’s do it again.”
While Diaz is certainly looking out for his fighter, it's difficult to find a lot of knowledgeable observers who feel Bradley won, or that he's a tougher opponent than Marquez.
Reports surfaced last week indicating that Bradley's team was hoping to put him back into the ring in December.
Possible opponents included Russian junior welterweight Ruslan Provodnikov, former champion Zab Judah and junior welterweight belt holder Lamont Peterson.
For his part, Diaz told BoxingScene.com he is hoping his guy will get a slightly bigger fight than that.
"A fight that would make sense for Tim would be Danny Garcia, Andre Berto—someone like that.”
