Denis Sokolov Suffers Awful Injury, Severs Carotid Artery After Skate Cuts Neck
That moment hockey fans fear the most happened during a game in Russia on Sunday. Fortunately, the injured Denis Sokolov is doing fine and expects to play again shortly.
Yahoo! Sports cites Czech site Sport Aktualne's reporting on the 35-year-old defenseman, who had his neck sliced when another player tried to leap over him during a KHL game.
Here is the video, and you can view the incident starting at the 1:13 mark. Be warned that there is a fair amount of blood, making it possibly NSFW and not for the squeamish.
That is the sight of Sokolov having his carotid artery cut and spilling a pint of blood onto the ice.
The Yahoo! report sets the scene in a game between Yekaterinburg Automobilist and Traktor Chelyabinsk:
"...Sokolov lost nearly a pint of blood when (Jan) Bulis' skate clipped him at the start of the third period. Sokolov and Bulis were chasing the puck when Sokolov fell to the ice; Bulis attempted to hurdle him and continue the play, when his skate slashed Sokolov's face as he appeared to step on him.
"
After that kind of injury, you would be sane to fear the worst. However, Sokolov seems to be doing fine, and the report insures that he is actually more of a man than I will ever be.
You see, he plans to sit out a game but hopes to return to the ice for "the Sept. 20 match against Khanty-Mansiysk."
A lack of ability to skate and an aversion to sharp things going near my face may be reasons I never excelled at hockey.
What we would consider a horrific incident is but a minor inconvenience to this hockey hero.
