Reports: Legendary UConn Head Basketball Coach Jim Calhoun to Retire

Ryan SatskySep 12, 2012

Longtime Connecticut Huskies head basketball coach Jim Calhoun's retirement is "imminent," according to NBC Channel 30 in Connecticut.

The story was confirmed shortly thereafter by CBS reporter Jeff Goodman, as was the likelihood of current assistant and former NBA point guard Kevin Ollie getting a shot at the Huskies coaching job:

"

Jim Calhoun to retire, source confirmed to CBSSports. Announcement expected tomorrow. Kevin Ollie meeting now with administration.

Calhoun, who is 70 years old, is facing a postseason ban for the 2012-13 season after failing to meet the APR score requirements, which is an academic performance scale.

In addition to the postseason ban, UConn's roster has undergone enormous changes due to an NBA exodus this offseason.

Jeremy Lamb and Andre Drummond left school early to enter the NBA Draft, and were both drafted in the lottery.

Starting center Alex Oriakhi transferred to Missouri. Michael Bradley, a backup center, moved on to Western Kentucky. Athletic wingman Roscoe Smith transferred to UNLV.

Calhoun didn't have many positives to look forward to this season, which would make his retirement understandable.

Calhoun informed the news station that "nothing has been finalized," and then stated that "it is a matter of him and his agent dotting the i's and crossing the t's."

The three-time national champion coach leaves behind a legacy nothing short of legendary.

In addition to his three national titles, Calhoun has accumulated 873 wins over his career. He has also won seven Big East Tournament titles over his 26 seasons at Connecticut.

Calhoun was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005.

According to the NBC article, UConn's athletic director has stated he has no planned coach-in-waiting, but Calhoun has expressed his sincere interest in Ollie as his replacement.

Jim Calhoun saw the writing on the wall. But it is safe to say that just two years removed from a national championship, UConn's legendary coach is heading out on top.
