Freddie Roach Won't Give Up Pacquiao and Chavez for Amir Khan

Leo ReyesSep 12, 2012

British rising star Amir Khan wants Manny Pacquiao and Julio Cesar Chavez out of Freddie Roach's Wild Card Boxing Club as a precondition to retain the Hall of Fame trainer's services as his coach and trainer.

Khan believes his two successive defeats were brought about by Roach's inability to devote more time to his training due to the trainer's hectic schedules.

Roach told Boxing Scene that Khan's father Shah and his manager Asif Vali have informed him they were willing to retain his services, but only if he dumps Pacquaio and Chavez.

Obviously they want Roach to give Khan his full attention while on training.

"They [Amir's camp] told me this -- and this is pretty good -- they told me if I make Amir number one, and get rid of Manny [Pacquiao] and [Julio Cesar] Chavez [Jr.], they will still come back to me," Roach said during a conversation with Boxingscene.com.

"[They said] if we're number one and you get rid of Manny and Chavez, we'll stay with you. I told them 'I can't do that.' They asked me that question face to face and on the phone," Roach said via Yahoo! sports.

In his recent fights, Khan had to travel to the Philippines to train alongside Pacquiao in Baguio City for a week or two and moves along with Team Pacquiao back to the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles for the remainder of the training camp.

After his KO victory over Zab Judah in July 2011, Khan later lost to Lamont Peterson via split decision at the Washington Convention Center last December.

Khan's controversial loss to Peterson was followed by a more damaging and devastating loss (fourth-round TKO) to Danny Garcia on July 14 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

The two successive defeats sent Khan's father and his manager back to the drawing board. Obviously they could not accept the prospect of another loss for the young, promising fighter.

It was at this point when they thought of scouting for a new trainer who can devote more of his time to sharpen his defenses.

One of Khan's weakest points is his poor defense, which observers say is typical of Roach's students, who mostly graduate as offensive fighters, including his best pupil, Pacquiao.

It is a common knowledge Roach is fond of the young Khan, and seemingly the feeling is mutual, but Roach seems determined not to dump Pacquiao and Chavez for Khan at this time.
