WWE's 5 Best in-Ring Wrestlers Who Would Benefit from a Manager

Mike ChiariJun 7, 2018

Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, managers were a huge part of professional wrestling. The role has been phased out over the last decade or so, but several current WWE superstars would really benefit from a mouthpiece.

As much as fans would like for every wrestler to be the total package, that simply isn't the case with most guys. For every CM Punk or Daniel Bryan who excels in every facet of the business, there are plenty of other guys who are one-dimensional and need help getting over.

Rather than giving those superstars a manager, the WWE seems to write them off as lost causes. The truth of the matter is that not every wrestler is perfect. Even if they aren't the best from an all-around perspective, they still have a lot to offer if given the proper tools.

The art of managing has truly been lost, but it's time to bring it back. Being able to speak and cut a promo has never been more important in wrestling, so it only makes sense to arm those who struggle in that regard with someone who doesn't.

Here are the top-five in-ring workers in the WWE today who would reach new heights if aided by a manager.

Tyson Kidd

1 of 5

Tyson Kidd is unquestionably one of the best pure wrestlers in the WWE today, but because of his lack of mic skills, he has had few opportunities to shine.

Kidd was built as a lovable underdog heading into the Money in the Bank pay-per-view, and he performed well on that night, but he has since been thrown into the background as he is teaming with Justin Gabriel.

Kidd is nearly as good as the likes of CM Punk and Daniel Bryan in the ring, but he doesn't receive the same notoriety because he is bland otherwise.

If Kidd were to be given a manager who could do the talking for him and liven up his act, I believe he could easily be a United States or Intercontinental champion, and perhaps more.

My choice for Kidd's manager would be "The Mouth of the South" Jimmy Hart. He is already considered one of the greatest managers in wrestling history. Therefore, his presence would give Kidd instant credibility.

Kidd is essentially an honorary member of the Hart family as well. Since Hart famously managed the Hart Foundation, the pairing would make sense.

Hart made a one-night-only return to managing several months ago when he managed the team of Kidd and Heath Slater.

He is employed by the WWE in some capacity, and I don't believe he has much going on, so perhaps he would be receptive to a return.

There is no doubt that he would make Kidd a very relevant player in the midcard scene.

Tensai

2 of 5

When Tensai debuted on the night after WrestleMania, there was plenty of buzz surrounding him, which ultimately led to huge wins over the likes of John Cena and CM Punk in the following weeks.

However, Tensai was unable to get over as a monster heel, thanks largely to his past WWE foray under the Albert gimmick. It now seems like the creative team has all but given up on him.

Tensai has never been a great talker, and since his current character only speaks Japanese, there isn't much you can do with him.

I would have had Tensai explain his reasoning for switching to the Japanese culture, and I would have given him a very anti-American gimmick to draw some heat. However, the writers decided against that for whatever reason.

Despite that, Tensai is one of the best big-man workers in the company and he has actually had a pair of fantastic matches against world heavyweight champion Sheamus. That alone isn't getting Tensai over, though, so I would give him a manager.

Mr. Fuji would have been ideal, but he's 77 years old and retired from wrestling, so that isn't a possibility.

Going off the board a bit, perhaps the WWE can sign Sonny Onoo, who successfully managed the likes of Jushin "Thunder" Liger, Ultimo Dragon and other Japanese stars in WCW.

If he isn't available, bringing back John Laurinaitis makes sense since Big Johnny is universally hated and often used Tensai as a heavy during his time as general manager.

Kofi Kingston

3 of 5

Kofi Kingston has consistently been one of the WWE's best and most athletic in-ring performers over the past six years, but I can't help but feel that he has reached a ceiling that he is incapable of breaking through on his own.

Kofi has a unique skill set when it comes to the wrestling side of things, but he is almost painful to listen to on the mic at times.

Kofi has actually accomplished a lot when you take his limited speaking ability into account. He is a three-time Intercontinental champion, three-time tag champion and two-time United States champion.

Many fans are clamoring for him to become world champion at some point, but unless he magically gains charisma or gets a manager, that simply isn't going to happen.

My idea to make Kofi Kingston interesting again is multi-faceted. I feel like he has gone as far as he can as a face and needs to change things up. I'll probably get accused of wanting to turn everyone heel, but the fact of the matter is that Kofi can't go on like this and expect to advance any further.

I believe that Kofi should turn on R-Truth, become heel and win King of the Ring. It hasn't been contested since Sheamus won it nearly two years ago, so it may be time to bring it back.

King Kofi Kingston would be great (acronym notwithstanding) and it would open the door for the WWE to sign Ring of Honor manager Prince Nana.

Like Kofi, Nana is of Ghanaian descent and they would be a perfect match. They could have an African royalty gimmick with the charismatic Nana doing most of the talking. Maybe Kofi would then be able to climb that next rung of the ladder.

Jack Swagger

4 of 5

There are few big men as gifted as Jack Swagger in the WWE currently, but there are also few talents who have been utilized as poorly.

Swagger is a former world heavyweight champion, and while there is no question that he was given that title too soon, he was booked about as badly as a champion can possibly be booked. I feel like that has had a lot to do with his struggles since.

Swagger is one of the more underrated workers in the WWE. He has a good mix of power and technical ability and has proven capable of working a solid match with almost anyone.

There is no doubt that Swagger's biggest weakness is his speaking ability. He actually did have some entertaining promos as world champion, but he doesn't seem overly comfortable on the mic, and that has hurt him.

The WWE had the perfect opportunity to allow him and Vickie Guerrero to do their own thing a couple of months ago, but Dolph Ziggler beat Swagger in a match to retain Vickie's services despite the fact that he doesn't need her.

Swagger does, so why not break Dolph and Vickie up and have Vickie bring Swagger back into the fold?

As was the case with Tensai, John Laurinaitis could be a fallback option as well. I can't really put into words why I think Swagger and Laurinaitis would make a good partnership, but I can just see them working well together.

Laurinaitis is no marvel on the mic in his own right, but his nuclear heat would be beneficial to the All-American American.

Sin Cara

5 of 5

No matter how good a wrestler is in the ring, if he can't say a single word, marketing him as a main-event guy is a pretty tough sell.

That is the conundrum that the WWE currently has with Sin Cara.

The high-flying luchador is one of the WWE's most diverse and exciting in-ring workers, but he can only speak Spanish and is usually totally silent.

The fact that he doesn't speak does make him special in some ways, but you can't have a major angle where one superstar doesn't speak.

If Sin Cara is allowed to continue on his own without a mouthpiece, perhaps his wrestling can carry him to a midcard title, but there is absolutely no chance of him achieving more than that.

Sin Cara has been teaming with Rey Mysterio as of late and I believe that they make an excellent tag team. However, I would eventually like to see them split up and have a match at WrestleMania.

That could be Mysterio's retirement match after which he can transition to being Sin Cara's manager. Mysterio isn't great on the mic, but he is capable and has already started doing some translating for Sin Cara.

If the writers wanted to take Sin Cara in another direction and turn him heel, though, perhaps they could bring back Armando Estrada.

Estrada is actually of Palestinian descent, but he worked as a Cuban businessman while in the WWE. Therefore, I could see Estrada cutting some excellent promos on Sin Cara's behalf.

Whatever the case, Sin Cara needs someone to do the talking since he can't do it himself.
