WWE: Why CM Punk and Paul Heyman Would Be the Best Wrestler-Manager Combo Ever

Mike ChiariJun 3, 2018

There have been countless incredible wrestler-manager tandems in the business over the years, but if CM Punk and Paul Heyman team up as expected, it would blow all others out of the water.

As Heyman was integral in Punk's early WWE success, speculation has run rampant over the past several weeks that Punk and Heyman might form a partnership, and it seems to have come to fruition.

After Punk attacked John Cena and helped Alberto Del Rio defeat him in a Falls Count Anywhere match on Raw, Punk jumped into a car, which was surprisingly being driven by Heyman. The show went off the air, so no explanation was given, but this is certain to be a major topic of conversation in wrestling circles over the next week.

Considering that Punk is one of the most beloved wrestlers in the industry right now and Heyman is one of the most respected wrestling minds ever, I don't see how this can possibly fail.

Both Punk and Heyman are absolutely fantastic at what they do and figure to form a dream team that will rival the likes of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig or any other iconic sports pairing that you can think of.

Punk and Heyman teaming up essentially bucks the trend of past wrestler-manager relationships. In the past, a wrestler has almost always been given a manager because he couldn't get over on his own or couldn't handle the mic well enough to connect with the fans.

There have been some obvious exceptions, as Bobby "The Brain" Heenan managed guys like Mr. Perfect and "Ravishing" Rick Rude who would have been fine on their own, and Jimmy Hart had stints with the likes of Hulk Hogan and Bret Hart, but the rule of thumb is giving wrestlers a manager if they need a mouthpiece.

Punk doesn't need anyone to do the talking for him, as he is probably the best promo man in the business today, but it wouldn't be much of a stretch to say that Heyman is No. 2 on that prestigious list. Few have wits as quick or tongues as sharp as Punk and Heyman, so it would be an understatement to say that I am intrigued by the possibilities a partnership between them could create.

There have been plenty of great superstars and plenty of great managers over the years, but it could easily be argued that Punk and Heyman would be the best duo. I'm not saying that Punk is the best wrestler ever or that Heyman is the best manager ever; however, I can't come up with a wrestler-manager combination with a better mesh of skills and overall assets.

Heenan and Ric Flair come to mind, but Heenan was considered a personal consultant rather than a manager, and it was a fairly short-lived partnership to begin with. We obviously have no idea whether or not Punk and Heyman are in it together for the long haul, but they have the potential to do something very special.

Great managers have been lacking for at least the past decade, and there hasn't been a good stable since the dissolution of Nexus. Heyman and Punk could accomplish something huge if they expand their talent base, possibly by inviting Brock Lesnar into the group when he returns and maybe even adding another former Heyman guy in Big Show.

When a heel stable is done right, it makes the entire product better. The nWo, the Four Horsemen, D-Generation X, Evolution and Nexus in its infancy are all prime examples of groups that captivated the viewing audience. Any group headed by Punk and Heyman is bound to do precisely that, so I hope there is more than meets the eye in this situation.

When wrestlers and managers unite it generally involves one extra-talented guy carrying a lesser person to prominence, but Punk and Heyman would be so much different from the norm. Both Punk and Heyman have accomplished essentially everything possible in their respective roles, so putting them together is a brilliant idea.

You can never have too much of a good thing in wrestling, and mic work falls into that category. It is so important to be able to express your thoughts through promos in wrestling today, and both Punk and Heyman excel in that area.

Sometimes in wrestling you can tell something is a perfect fit before it ever truly takes shape, and this is the case with Punk and Heyman, who could very well form the best wrestler-manager team ever.
