La Liga Transfers: 20 Names Who Could Move on Deadline Day
Most major European leagues are now nearing the end of the 2012 summer transfer window.
Lots of clubs will look to strengthen their squads or make a last effort at balancing their books in the final hours. Spanish clubs are no different.
La Liga has already lost some major stars this summer. Santi Cazorla moved to Arsenal while Javi Martinez will now play for Bayern Munich.
Luka Modric and Alex Song have come to Spain's two biggest clubs, but what about the rest of the league?
Who are some other players we could see on the move before the window closes—both to and from the league?
Read on to see 20 big names that could still change sides in La Liga.
Fernando Llorente
1 of 20Team: Athletic Club
Potential Moves: Juventus, Arsenal, England
Story: Another Basque star looks to be on his way out, but for very different reasons.
El Rey Leon is in the final year of his contract and has stated that he will not renew. That has pushed the club to sell him in the transfer window, but they will not lower their asking price.
This one looks certain. It is just a matter of which club he will go to. There is a chance that he will be sold now and finish the season in Spain, but I expect he'll be in Italy or England soon.
Paco Alcacer
2 of 20Team: Valencia
Potential Moves: Getafe
Story: Valencia have been the most successful Spanish team in this summer's transfer window. They brought in many needs, including depth in attack.
That has unfortunately left young star Paco Alcacer as the odd man out. The striker, dubbed the 'New David Villa' could leave the club to get some first-team action.
Getafe is said to be interested so the move makes sense for all parties involved.
Miku
3 of 20Team: Getafe
Potential Move: Spain, England
Story: If Alcacer does make his move to Madrid, look for another striker to get shipped out, potentially on loan.
Miku would bring in the most interest and also has one of the team's higher salaries A sale could be possible, but a loan move would be more likely with Alcacer likely only doing the same.
Beñat
4 of 20Team: Real Betis
Potential Moves: Athletic Bilbao, Wolfsburg
Story: Beñat had a breakout season last year that even earned him a spot on the Spanish qualifying squad for this summer's euros.
His great campaign has seen interest rise from teams around Europe.
Athletic Club makes sense given that he is a Basque player who would be right at home in Bilbao. The club has claimed that they will not move for him, but that may change now that Javi Martinez has been sold.
Wolfsburg is also said to be chasing the midfielder and appear willing to meet his buyout clause. Keep an eye out for this one.
Alvaro Vasquez
5 of 20Team: Espanyol
Potential Moves: Getafe
Story: The young striker looks to have played his final match in Barcelona.
Alvaro arrived as one of the brightest prospects at the club, but has never been able to consistently play at a top level.
It now looks like he could be on the way out with Getafe rumored to be close to a deal.
Jonathan Dos Santos
6 of 20Team: Barcelona
Potential Moves: Sevilla, Real Betis
Story: The Mexican only earned his promotion this season, but already looks to be on his way of out Catalunya.
Barcelona's midfield just got deeper with the arrival of Alex Song and the fabulous play of Sergi Roberto gives the club a chance to get something out of JDS this summer.
This one could go either way. Dos Santos clearly does not want to leave, but interest is high for him and the club will look to take advantage of that.
Gio Dos Santos
7 of 20Team: Tottenham
Potential Moves: Sevilla, Mallorca, Spain
Story: Let's not forget Jonathan's brother here! Gio has shown for Mexico that if he could just get consistent time on the pitch, his potential is still very high.
He may finally get that time if he completes a long-desired move to Spain. Atletico Madrid has shown interest while Sevilla could reunite Gio with his brother and fellow La Masia product.
The player and his agent have made it known that they are being held hostage by Tottenham, but hope survives with just hours remaining in the transfer window.
Gary Medel
8 of 20Team: Sevilla
Potential Moves: Napoli
Story: Sevilla has greatly improved the starting XI this summer, but the lack of extra revenue from playing in Europe could force them to sell a couple of stars in order to bring in revenue.
The Chilean is a clear candidate here as Napoli have expressed interest in him. Not to mention that Hedwiges Maduro was brought in this summer from Valencia.
Sevilla fans hope this does not happen. Losing Medel would be the second-biggest blow behind Jesus Navas leaving.
Unfortunately for them, this is a business and the new financial regulations could force Sevilla's hand.
Kaka
9 of 20Team: Real Madrid
Potential Moves: Sao Paulo, Italy, England
Story: The former Ballon d'Or winner has finally gotten fit and, in the last six months, has started showing signs of his former ability.
Unfortunately, the bounce-back may have come too late for the Brazilian as it seems Real Madrid are willing to take offers for their star midfielder.
PSG and Milan have already backed out of any deal, but Sao Paulo could look to their former player to fill the void left by Lucas.
Bringing in Luka Modric could make the club more willing to sell their star this summer, even after loaning Nuri Sahin to Liverpool.
Javier Saviola
10 of 20Team: Benfica
Potential Moves: Malaga
Story: After losing Ruud van Nistelrooy to retirement and Salomon Rondon to Russia, Malaga are in a tight spot in attack.
They are currently relying on two teenagers to take them through the season. Some veteran leadership is sought and Benfica's Javier Saviola looks a possible choice.
He has experience in the league and would add depth to a side that will play in the Champions League next season.
Roque Santa Cruz
11 of 20Team: Manchester City
Potential Moves: Malaga, Spain
Story: Another option for the struggling Spanish club is Roque Santa Cruz.
The South American had a solid season at Real Betis last season and has been told that he no longer has a place in Manchester.
He is looking for a new club and Malaga are apparently ready to make him one of two signings on deadline day.
Lass Diarra
12 of 20Team: Real Madrid
Potential Moves: England, France
Story: Another player who could be on his way out of the Bernabeu is Lass Diarra.
The French midfielder has never quite earned Jose Mourinho's trust and is seen more as a utility player. Diarra had been linked to many teams this past summer, but talks have cooled in recent weeks.
If another team is willing to make a strong offer, though, Diarra could be one of many Madrid players to leave the club.
Enzo
13 of 20Team: Malaga
Potential Moves: Spain, Italy
Story: Malaga's financial troubles have already seen them sell their best player and number one striker.
The club still needs to offload some players and almost everyone could be on the way out.
A couple of defensive midfielders have been brought in and Jeremy Toulalan recently committed to the club.
That could see Enzo get his way and find a new home outside of Andalusia.
Bruno Soriano
14 of 20Team: Villarreal
Potential Moves: Atletico Madrid, Spain
Story: With his club now playing in Segunda B, Bruno may be the best player in Spain's second division.
The Yellow Submarine is in a tough spot and has been selling almost any player that asks for it.
The club would love to hold on to their star midfielder, but the financial burden could now be too high and he may be on his way out.
If he does end up at Atletico Madrid, they would become a much stronger side.
Pablo Hernandez
15 of 20Team: Valencia
Potential Moves: Swansea City
Story: Michael Laudrup aims to add even more Spanish flavor to his surprising squad by bringing Pablo Hernandez to South Wales.
The Valencian winger is a reported target of the Premier League side as Laudrup tries to reunite with the player he managed at Getafe.
Swansea recently had a bid rejected, but that does not mean they will give up their pursuit of the 27-year-old.
Mathieu Debuchy
16 of 20Team: Lille
Potential Moves: Real Madrid
Story: The French defender has been a hot commodity over the last few months with Lille seemingly ready to cash in on their coveted right back.
Real Madrid are looking to add depth at the position and potentially a replacement for Alvaro Arbeloa in the starting XI.
The move makes sense for all parties, but Los Merengues will face competition on this one.
Ricardo Quaresma
17 of 20Team: Besiktas
Potential Moves: Atletico Madrid
Story: The Turkish club is reportedly trying to lower their wage bill by getting rid of the former Barcelona forward.
Atletico Madrid are rumored to be considering adding the Portuguese star to their ranks with Diego Costa headed the other way.
Park Chu-Young
18 of 20Team: Arsenal
Potential Moves: Celta Vigo
Story: The South Korean striker excited Arsenal fans when he first arrived at the club. Fans were hoping that Arsene Wenger had spotted yet another great young talent.
The move ended up not panning out for either party and Park seems to have been offered a way out by Spanish newcomers Celta Vigo.
Ricardo Carvalho
19 of 20Team: Real Madrid
Potential Moves: Queens Park Rangers, Retire
Story: "Carvalho's career is over if he stays at Real Madrid."
Ouch! I am only loosely summarizing Jose Mourinho's recent comments about his central defender, but such statements can only be considered harsh.
These are harsh words for a player who helped Mourinho to a Champions League title, UEFA Cup and two Premier League titles.
I suppose the Portuguese defender should thank his manager for being so honest, but a softer blow could surely have been dealt.
Ibrahim Afellay
20 of 20Team: Barcelona
Potential Moves: Schalke, Inter, England
Story: With Cristian Tello apparently staying put and David Villa nearing full health, the Dutch midfielder has been deemed excess baggage at Camp Nou.
Afellay's agent has come out and admitted that he is negotiating a loan move for his player with several top European clubs.
Afellay has never been too sold on the idea of leaving Barcelona, but he may yet get to choose where he will play next season.
