Phillies News: Phils Lose 10-3, Shane Victorino to Team USA, Adam Eaton Released
Shane Victorino got things started off on the right foot on the heels of learning he would play center field for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, scoring the first run in the first inning to give the Phillies an early lead. Andrew Carpenter, though, failed to keep control of the baseball in the bottom of the first and surrendered four runs before recording an out.
Carpenter struggled mightily a day after Carlos Carrasco was brilliant. Carpenter walked a pair of Reds to lead off the game and then gave up some big hits, chasing him from the game before some people were through the front gates.
Ryan Madson saw his first action of the spring, and while he didn't throw the fastball that he discovered last October, he was effective in getting his outs. Suspended reliever J.C. Romero pitched two innings and was a little shaky. Romero walked three but picked off two Reds baserunners.
The big news of the day, though, was the release of Adam Eaton. Following that news, word spread that Victorino will indeed represent Team USA in the upcoming World Baseball Classic. He will fill the void left by Grady Sizemore of the Cleveland Indians, who will be out with an injury.
It is too early to know what the lineup will look like, but it would be interesting to see Jimmy Rollins and Victorino batting back-to-back in the Team USA lineup.
Ryan Howard had the day off, as did Jayson Werth, who has yet to play a game.
Next up will be a game tomorrow in Clearwater against the World Series opponent, the Tampa Bay Rays. Big storylines for tomorrow's game, as opposed to none in this game. Kyle Kendrick will get his chance to make a case for the fifth starting spot in the rotation. He has work to do after Carrasco and J.A. Happ's outing yesterday.
Of course much attention will be given to Pat Burrell, who will suit up and play the game for the Rays. Brad Lidge is also scheduled to throw tomorrow.
