WWE: Why Big Show Deserves to Be in Main-Event Scene

Mike ChiariJun 1, 2018

The Big Show has been a fixture in the wrestling business since competing as The Giant in WCW in 1995, and while I've never been a huge fan, I've always respected his work. Big Show has done an especially nice job over the past few months as a heel, and I believe he has earned the right to remain in the main-event scene.

There is no question that Big Show is far more effective as a heel than a face, since that's essentially what his body type dictates. I wasn't too keen on his initial heel turn as John Laurinaitis' lackey, but since Big Johnny has been out of the picture, Big Show has been a lone, dominant force.

His performance in the triple-threat match for the WWE Championship at SummerSlam is really what sold me on the current state of Big Show. He pretty much controlled the entire contest as he continually took down CM Punk and John Cena, and he honestly looked like a true threat despite the fact that nobody thought he could win.

He was ultimately forced to tap out with the dueling Koji Clutch and STF submissions, and then he was pinned by Punk after a Cena Attitude Adjustment, but Big Show still came out of that match looking good. He basically had to fight Punk and Cena at the same time, so it was almost like a handicap match for him.

The way things are currently heading, it looks like Punk and Cena are going to face off at Night of Champions. That means that Big Show will be on the outs and in need of something to do, but there's no reason why he can't remain in the hunt for a top title like the World Heavyweight Championship.

I understand that the World Heavyweight Championship isn't technically a main-event title anymore and often leads off pay-per-views, but when you think of a world title, you think main event. The World Heavyweight champion, Sheamus, is stuck in a dead-end feud with Alberto Del Rio right now and literally anything else would be an improvement for him.

Big Show seems to be the perfect opponent for Sheamus, as he is one of the few guys in the company who poses a true physical threat to the Great White. Not only has Del Rio failed to be a credible challenger due to the fact that he hasn't been built correctly, but he simply isn't as physically imposing as a guy like Big Show.

Sheamus is always saying how he loves to fight, and he has been a dominant force since winning the title at WrestleMania, but all of his opponents have been small-to-average-sized guys like Daniel Bryan, Dolph Ziggler, Chris Jericho, Randy Orton and Del Rio. Big Show is a totally different entity, and he would pose a great challenge to Sheamus.

Many have yet to buy in with regards to Sheamus being world champion, but that's more because of booking than anything that Sheamus has done wrong. If the writers really want Sheamus to get over, then they should have Big Show attack Sheamus, get the better of him a few times, but ultimately have Sheamus beat Big Show in a feud.

That would legitimize Sheamus and the World Heavyweight Championship, as it has really degenerated over the past few months. Big Show may not excite everyone, but he is playing a great monster heel right now and is exactly the kind of guy that Sheamus needs to beat in a feud.

I wouldn't want Big Show to be world champion again since he's a veteran guy who doesn't need the strap, but I have no problem with him being in the title picture. There is a very obvious lack of main-event heels in the company right now, so it only makes sense to allow Big Show to remain near the top of the card.
