WWE SummerSlam 2012 Highlights: Most Underrated Matches of Epic Event

Tim KeeneyJun 6, 2018

As much as the overly critical will argue otherwise, SummerSlam was a very entertaining PPV. But it wasn't because of the top-flight matches; it was because of the ones not getting mentioned.

It wasn't because of Lesnar and Triple H's main-event slugfest that ended 15 minutes before the end of the show. And it wasn't because of the Triple Threat WWE Championship that had a twist ending better than that of The Sixth Sense.

Instead, it was the underrated matches that saved the night. Let's take a look at the two best matches that nobody is talking about.

Chris Jericho defeats Dolph Ziggler

I'm not afraid to say this was the best match of the night. But because there was no title on the line and it meant Ziggler would continue to hold onto his Money in the Bank contract, people were either uninterested or disappointed.

If you take out all the underlying factors, though, the action inside the ring—and, at times, out of it—was absolutely top notch.

Considering that Y2J and The Showoff are essentially the same character, just 10 years removed, it wasn't surprising to see them work so well together in such an effortless manner, displaying power, technique and high-flying ability.

The match came to a close with arguably the best move of the night: Jericho's Hurricanrana off the top ropes, which eventually led to the Walls of Jericho for a submission.

All in all, it lasted just over 13 minutes, which made it the second-longest fight of the night. But it was worth every second.

R-Truth and Kofi Kingston defeat Prime-Time Players

While Jericho and Ziggler lasted the second-longest, the Tag Team Championship match unfortunately was the shortest of the night—unless you count the pre-show.

Nonetheless, fans sure got their money's worth during the seven-minute battle.

Honestly, I could watch Truth and Kingston go up against Mae Young and The Fabulous Moolah, and I would still be entertained. Their acrobatics in the air are second to none, and that was on display in full force against the Prime-Time Players, who weren't too shabby themselves.

Whenever Truth and Kingston take the ring, it's nonstop action. Their feuds and storylines may be lacking, but they are must-see TV when they perform.
