WWE SummerSlam 2012: Brock Lesnar's Win Sets Up Dominating Run

Adam WellsMay 31, 2018

WWE needed to do something big with Brock Lesnar to make him the cash cow it looked like he was going to be when he first returned after WrestleMania. At SummerSlam, any possible questions were answered.

When the Lesnar–Triple H match was announced, any reasonable WWE fan would have reservations about the way it would turn out. Triple H is not exactly known for his logical booking sense, especially when it comes to decisions involving him losing.

But for one night, Triple H was able to put away his ego, and Lesnar was given exactly what he needed to be the kind of monster that WWE hasn't had in a long time.

When Lesnar came back to wrestle John Cena at Extreme Rules, Lesnar's style of match was so different from anything that you would see in WWE. It was one of the best matches in recent WWE history, but it was undone by an inexplicable finish that had Cena go over.

Lesnar's momentum wasn't completely gone, though it had stalled a bit. WWE needed to give him something to justify his contract, as well as make sure he retained the drawing power he had or at least appeared to have.

With Lesnar going over strong at SummerSlam, everything has been set up for him. Not only does he not have an excuse not to show up for months at a time—because there is no one out there who can stop him—why should he keep showing up?

Eventually WWE will get to the point where Undertaker is the only man who wants to compete with him, but until then, Lesnar can be given free rein to do whatever he wants as the biggest heel in the company.

Lesnar needed a win to retain some value to WWE. He needed a dominating performance that would show the crowd what he was all about, and he managed to get both in one fell swoop. All that remains is to see who WWE puts him in the ring with next.
