WWE Summerslam 2012: Top 5 Things That Made It Disappointing

Chris FeatherstoneAug 20, 2012

Since 1988, SummerSlam has given us a host of indelible marks in WWE history. Coined as the "biggest event of the summer" the hype for this pay-per-view warrants every member of the WWE Universe to set their expectations high.

Unfortunately, the 25th Anniversary didn't meet those expectations.

There were many elements of the event that was poorly executed, and made it seem like the writing was rushed and not thoroughly analyzed.

Here are the top five things that made the PPV disappointing.

5. Timing of the Miz/Mysterio Match

1 of 5

Let's first start off by saying the Batman attire by Rey Mysterio was just bad. El Batman, anyone? I didn't get it either. Did he (or anyone near him) realize that wearing Batman attire probably at this time isn't the best idea? Someone should have convinced him to change his choice of garb.

Since they didn't, we were forced to see El Batman.

What were weren't forced to see was him lose to the Miz, which was a good decision. The timing of the match, however, was not very good. Just when the match started to heat up, we get a Skull Crushing Finale, and "Holy 619, Batman!"—the match is over.

This should have gone a little longer, and could have been an even better match than it culminated to be.

4. Kevin Rudolph Performance

This just wasn't necessary. Yes, I understand that the performance was a part of the spectacle of SummerSlam, but in hindsight, it could have definitely been spared.

The fans surely weren't into it. He was getting boos from start to finish.

And some of the Divas? Terrible dancing. It seemed like Tamina Snuka didn't hear any of the song because she was so concerned with staying on beat. And I guess it is fine for Eve to totally break out of kayfabe for this performance as well.

On a lighter note, good to see Rosa Mendes after everything that has transpired to her as of late.

3. CM Punk/Big Show/John Cena Match

3 of 5

The match as a whole wasn't terrible. Big Show—although having no considerable shot of winning—was a needed element to not make this match redundant.

The happenings during the match, though—utterly ridiculous.

There were two major things that caused very angry "smh" moments:

  1. Why was the Big Show still in the match and he tapped out? That made absolutely no sense. The question should not have been whether the match resumed, rather, it should have been if CM Punk and John Cena should have continued facing each other. This would have been a much better decision. Even though Cena/Punk alone would have been redundant, the Big Show made his presence felt enough to be out of the match and let the other two finish it.
  2. AJ comes out, builds suspense from the audience wondering what she was going to decide, hearing both Punk and Cena plead their respective cases—just to say, "restart the match." Wow, what a payoff.

On a lighter note, kudos to CM Punk for the Hart Foundation-esque tights. Well done.

2. Sheamus/Alberto Del Rio Ending

4 of 5

If I haven't already made my point—ladies and gentlemen, I want to introduce you to the "biggest event of the summer." The milestone 25th Anniversary of WWE Summerslam.

Lights, camera, glitz, glamor, performances—and the World Heavyweight Championship match ending in the referee not seeing that Alberto Del Rio's foot was on the ropes. This wouldn't have even been satisfying on an episode of Smackdown, moreover a PPV of this caliber.

Seemingly, this all but affirms the dreaded inevitable—the Sheamus/Alberto Del Rio feud will continue.

1. HHH Sentimental Loss and Departure

5 of 5

This had to be one of the worst ways to end the PPV. Really, out of all the possible outcomes, did we have to be indulged with HHH crying because he lost to Brock Lesnar? This was one of the most ridiculous moments in the history of SummerSlam.

The match as a whole was quite odd. The crowd fell nearly completely flat, minus some near falls, and knowing the collegiate background of Lesnar, many moments were hard to watch. The miscues were flying all over the place, and if I had no idea that he put on stellar matches 10 years ago, it would be very difficult to convince me otherwise.

Honestly, the entire WWE Universe and their unborn children could have been spared the debacle otherwise known as the sentimental conclusion of this match. The funny thing is, Cole and Lawler grossly oversold how this could be HHH's last match. If so, what a perfect way to completely taint what we saw at WrestleMania 28.
