Report Card Grades for Every Dallas Cowboys Rookie Through Preseason Week 2
After Saturday night's preseason game against the Chargers, we now have a better idea as to where each rookie stands with the Cowboys.
Each and every pick is striving to make the team, and with each passing day and game we have a better look as to how far these rookies have truly come.
So before the Cowboys travel back home to face the Rams on Saturday night, let's take a look at each drafted rookie and give them a passing or failing grade.
Morris Claiborne, CB: Incomplete
1 of 7Claiborne got his first taste of NFL game action against the Chargers on Saturday. He's now fully recovered from the sprained MCL he suffered before training camp and is looking to acclimate himself to the speed of the game.
I cannot give Claiborne a passing or failing grade because we haven't seen enough of him.
Does he deserve an "F'" because of his constant injuries, or should I give him an "A" for fighting through them?
I'm going to stick with the grade of "incomplete." There just isn't enough to grade him on.
We'll have a better opportunity to see him in action on Saturday when the Cowboys take on the Rams.
INCOMPLETE
Tyrone Crawford, DE: B+
2 of 7He’s turning out to be a true find. What’s great about Crawford is that he’s performing well in training camp and he still has so much room to grow.
Crawford is the type of player that has a “high motor,” which should be a plus for Dallas.
According to the team's executive vice president Stephen Jones, Crawford is a big find for the Cowboys.
"“We may have hit big on him.”
"
Not a big quote, but it shows that Crawford has the attention of decision makers on the team.
I wasn’t high on him when the Cowboys drafted him, but so far it looks as if my trepidation was wrong.

Kyle Wilber, OLB: C+
3 of 7I really like Wilber and feel that he’ll eventually turn into a pretty good linebacker for the Cowboys.
He just can’t seem to stay on the field.
Wilber is recovering from a broken thumb after breaking a finger earlier this offseason.
He’s the second Cowboys rookie to have injury problems.
Wilber was having a pretty good camp sans a few mistakes, but that is to be expected for a rookie.
Once he’s fully healed and gets a full grasp on Rob Ryan’s scheme, the Cowboys will have one of the most dangerous linebacking units in the entire league.
I guarantee it!

Matt Johnson, SS: D-
4 of 7Johnson has been injured. Is this an overriding theme for Cowboys' rookies this season?
The fourth-round pick has been slowed by hamstring injuries and his chances of making the final roster are not looking good.
Admittedly, I'm not a fan of Johnson and thought that the Cowboys wasted a draft pick by picking him up.
At best I saw him as a special team's player, and the Cowboys were in need of a true NFL strong safety.

Danny Coale, WR: D-
5 of 7I really like Coale and believed that he would turn into the Cowboys' slot receiver down the road.
But like every other Cowboys rookie, he has struggled with injuries.
Coale had a fracture in his foot and now a sore left quadriceps.
Because of his inability to get on the field, other players have taken advantage of his absence.
Rookie Cole Beasley had 104 receiving yards against the Chargers' second unit on Saturday, which turned a few heads.
Maybe I can say that I had the name Cole correct, just the wrong one?
D-
James Hanna, TE: C-
6 of 7Here's another rook that I have taken a liking to.
Hanna is a big tight end with receiver speed and an inconsistent pair of hands.
He'll have to get better at run blocking and making sure he holds onto balls that are thrown his way, but the good thing about him is that he's growing.
With tight end Jason Witten's recent spleen injury, Hanna should have the chance to make a few more plays in practice.
It will not change his position on the team as the third tight end, but Hanna will have to make due with every opportunity that comes his way.
C+
Caleb McSurdy, ILB: D-
7 of 7McSurdy’s season is done before it even started. The inside LB tore his ACL last week and will be placed on injured reserve.
According to multiple reports, McSurdy has a very high football I.Q. and would eventually grow into a depth linebacker for the team.
He had a chance to make the roster as a special team’s player or reserve a spot on the practice squad, but the best he can hope to do now is try to bounce back in 2013.
