Most Likely Backlash Heel/Face Turns 🎭
The match that should earn the most stars and the most respect is Jericho vs. Ziggler. The story they will compose between the ropes, along with their combined speed, in-ring ability and showmanship, will make this the bout we remember from this SummerSlam.
The Young Must Destroy the Old
During the match between Shawn Michaels and Chris Jericho at WrestleMania XIX, Jim Ross delivered a poignant line that applies to this upcoming match as well.
"The laws of the jungle indeed carrying over to the squared circle tonight."
Jericho and Ziggler's SummerSlam match should echo that sentiment and mirror that classic match. Ziggler is the young lion who must prove himself by devouring the older alpha male.
WWE does not have to do much work in terms of storyline to get wrestling purists excited about this undercard match. For the most part, the tale will tell itself.
Before Jericho returns to his rock-star life, he is thankfully positioned to help Ziggler climb the WWE ladder—to push him closer to the greatness fans all expect him to achieve.
This is a golden opportunity for Ziggler. In terms of story, a Ziggler win catapults him to WWE's top tier.
Other than his Money in the Bank win, Ziggler has struggled to compile wins in 2012. In comes Jericho, a legend on the way out.
Ziggler can prove his veracity by destroying the self-proclaimed "King of the World."
Competition
Daniel Bryan vs. Kane could be great, but it will likely be one of the shorter matches of the card. There has been hardly any buildup for this battle, meaning it's likely to be of minimal importance despite the talent involved.
CM Punk vs. Big Show vs. John Cena just doesn't have the grand feel you'd expect of a major match on a major pay-per-view.
Perhaps that is due to Big Show being overexposed in recent months. John Cena has been put in the main event in seemingly every Raw and pay-per-view of 2012.
There is nothing novel about this match, though the performers will likely deliver an entertaining clash regardless. Show is unlikely to win the WWE Championship since his career is at such a late stage.
That leaves Punk or Cena as the two likely winners. With the recent bad blood brewing between The Rock and Punk, it has fans thinking Punk will hold on to the title until Royal Rumble for a match with The Great One.
Brock Lesnar vs. Triple H should feel larger than life. The star power is undeniable.
It should be a fantastic match, but it won't compete with Ziggler vs. Jericho in terms of athleticism.
Lesnar vs. Triple H should be the better fight; Ziggler vs. Jericho the better wrestling match.
Ziggler and Jericho are a better fit, and their chemistry will reverberate through the arena. These two wrestlers were built for one another. This match feels like the work of destiny.
SummerSlam 2012 will be great—one of the better pay-per-views of a fantastic year so far. The Ziggler and Jericho match will be the show's highpoint.
A man on the precipice of greatness faces a future Hall of Famer. WWE fans will witness a classic.
