WWE SummerSlam 2012 Matches: Breaking Down Main Event Battles at PPV

Adam WellsAug 14, 2012

As much as we hate the end of the summer, WWE makes the transition to fall a little easier with its biggest show of the season, SummerSlam.

There was a time when the show felt like it was on the same level as WrestleMania, even though it was never going to get the same level of promotion.

Now, SummerSlam doesn't have the same cache as WrestleMania, but it is still the biggest event we will see with the exception of the big show.

The feuds going into the show are few and far between, though the ones we do have are full of drama and intrigue.

Here is an in-depth look at the biggest feuds heading into SummerSlam.

Brock Lesnar vs. Triple H

The biggest feud heading into SummerSlam—I have no idea what to make of this match right now. The build has left a lot to be desired, even after what happened on Monday night.

Everything has been so focused on everyone else around Lesnar and Triple H that WWE seemingly forgot to build Lesnar vs. Triple H.

Looking at the match, the only justifiable outcome is Lesnar going over. Triple H means nothing at this point. He is still a nice name to have around for an occasional pay-per-view, but Lesnar is a potential game-changer if booked the right way.

WWE has shown little interest in booking Lesnar the right way—i.e. making him look like the biggest monster in the world—so I would not be shocked at all to see Triple H win the match. It's sad but true.

CM Punk vs. John Cena vs. Big Show

This match strikes me as basically Punk vs. Cena with another body thrown in just to get him on the card. Adding Big Show to the match really drags down the quality and anticipation, just because he is not someone who is a real title threat.

Punk's heel turn on the 1,000th Raw was as good as any single angle WWE has done this year, but losing the title immediately afterwards doesn't make that much sense to me. He wants respect, so what better way for him to get it than by defeating Cena and Big Show in a single match.

Cena is back in the title picture after a long absence, which means he is probably going to end up winning this match. Of course, if WWE is going to put him in every pay-per-view main event, he should be the champion to make the title feel like it matters.

Dolph Ziggler vs. Chris Jericho

This is the simplest match in the world to book. Let Jericho and Ziggler go out there for 15 minutes and steal the show, because it is the best pure wrestling match on paper. When it comes to the finish, Ziggler has to go over clean and strong.

Jericho is leaving after SummerSlam to tour with his band, so there is absolutely no reason for him to win this match. Plus, with him leaving, it gives WWE the opportunity to do a big injury angle that makes Ziggler look like a top star.

Ziggler is holding a Money in the Bank briefcase, so he needs all the help he can get. This match is the perfect showcase for his wrestling prowess, with an ending that can make him look like a superstar worthy of a title shot.
