UFC 150 Fight Card: "Fight Night" Awards Favorites
UFC 150 is coming in like a freight train. It's filled at the top with name brand MMA veterans and stacked at the bottom with hotshot youngsters.
There is a great deal to be excited for here and that ultimately means that Dana White is probably going to have his work cut out for him figuring out who to give bonuses to once the dust settles. With a bunch of fighters sporting loads of both submissions and knockouts, do not expect any of these categories to remain empty.
So who are the favorites to get the Knockout of the Night, Submission of the Night, and Fight of the Night? Look right here to find out.
Submission of the Night: Donald Cerrone
1 of 3Part of this pick is simply because of how likely it is for this fight to end with Melvin Guillard tapping.
Of Cerrone's 18 career wins, 13 of them are by submission. Of Guillard's 10 career losses, nine of them are from submission. Guillard's Achilles’s Heel is clearly his poor submission defense.
Granted, after back-to-back submission losses to Joe Lauzon and Jim Miller, Guillard has claimed to rededicate himself to MMA with an emphasis on improving his submission defense. That, however, does not change the fact that his biggest weakness is one of Cerrone's biggest strengths.
Hence, watch for Guillard to get choked out somewhere in the second round and for Cerrone to receive a nice check for it.
Alternate Options: Eiji Mitsuoka, Ken Stone, Dennis Bermudez
Knockout of the Night: Jared Hamman
2 of 3The main card tonight really features very few knockout artists except for Melvin Guillard and, well, you saw that last slide.
Bendo and Edgar have very strong chins. Shields vs. Herman and Okami vs. Roberts are both likely to become grappling clinics. Neither Lawrence nor Holloway are especially strong finishers.
The preliminary card, though, has bunches of fighters that can knock their opponent out. My pick? Jared Hamman.
Hamman has traditionally been overmatched to this point in his UFC career, which is the main culprit for his 2-3 record. However, he has the most established knockout power of the bottom half of the night's fights, with 10 of his 13 wins coming from knockouts.
As such, watch for Hamman to knock out Michael Kuiper.
Alternate options: Dustin Pague, Justin Lawrence, Yushin Okami
Fight of the Night: Benson Henderson vs. Frankie Edgar II
3 of 3Main events tend to be given the benefit of the doubt when it comes to getting Fight of the Night bonuses, but this bout does not really need help.
Ben Henderson is an exciting fighter that can punch, kick, choke, clinch or wrestle with anybody in the lightweight division. Frankie Edgar has fast-paced, in-and-out boxing and a threatening wrestling game that keeps all comers honest with their stand-up.
The two combined for a thriller at UFC 144 that took Fight of the Night honors then. The fight may not be quite as good, but it should still be regarded as the favorite to get the bonuses.
Alternate Options: Dennis Bermudez vs. Tommy Hayden, Melvin Guillard vs. Donald Cerrone
