Olympic Medal Tally 2012: Nations That Have Underachieved at London Games
The United States and China are running away with the Olympic medal tally at the 2012 Summer Games in London.
Meanwhile, the host nation is making a serious run at No. 3 in the count. Still, the surprises in the total medal tally aren't all good, but in fact bad.
Here we present some countries that have underachieved at the London Games this summer.
Australia
The Aussies looked superb on the hardwood in London on multiple occasions this summer, but ultimately fell in men's and women's basketball. The women will at least have a shot at winning a bronze medal, while the men will go home empty-handed.
Australia had 30 medals coming into Day 14, but only seven of them were gold. The continental nation boasts tons of talent in the swimming pool and on the track, but has managed to underachieve nonetheless in 2012.
Japan
Japan has finally picked up their pace in the gold medal chase. The Japanese had five gold medals coming into Day 14 in London, but were sitting at a measly two not long ago. Despite earning a handful of silver and bronze medals, Japan has failed to come in first in some notable events, including women's soccer.
The men's soccer team will aim for bronze on Day 14, but that will do little to change the fact that the Asian powerhouse has underachieved immensely at the Summer Games in 2012. For a nation that boasts a population of more than 126 million people, less than 50 medals just isn't good enough.
France
Male and females swimmers Yannick Agnel and Camille Muffat have combined for six of France's 29 total medals coming into Day 14 at the Games, signaling that the proud nation has underachieved to say the least this summer.
Outside of the swimming pool, the French have flown under the radar and are being upstaged by fellow European nations Great Britain and Germany. Although it could be much worse for France, considering that Spain only had 11 medals total coming into Day 14, they will still walk away from the 2012 Olympics knowing that they need to get back to the drawing board.
