WWE: How Sheamus Is Proving His Worth Every Week

Tom ClarkJun 7, 2018

Workhorse.  It’s a word that we as fans have heard applied to pro wrestlers before, especially in WWE. There’s no wordy definition, no double meaning involved here, the truth is it’s one of those words that is pretty much self explanatory.

But, since you asked, I’ll explain.

Basically it’s a guy who gets it done.  Period.  Every time he steps into the ring, he performs at a high level, doing it as only he can, giving fans and writers like myself a reason to get out of bed in the morning.

Well, at least professionally speaking.  I’m not obsessed with this WWE stuff, you know.

Okay, I am.  You got me.

A workhorse gets in there, and gives everything he has.  Despite how big the card may be, or who is featured in what match, the Superstar in question wrestles as if he’s in the main event, as if it’s totally up to him to give the crowd their money's worth.

For me, there are four men who currently fit that description in the house that Vince McMahon built: WWE Champion CM Punk, Dolph Ziggler, Daniel Bryan, and World Champion Sheamus.

Yes, Sheamus.  Surprised?  Don’t be.

Sheamus has gone from being a Superstar that couldn’t buy a victory, a guy who had apparently peaked perhaps too soon and was headed nowhere fast, to being the World Champion, and proving week in and week out that he deserved the recognition.

It’s a case of what happens when everything falls into place for a worker, a prime example of the good that comes of just staying the course, and doing what is necessary to get in a position to succeed.

When Sheamus was down, going through a valley, as a great number of WWE talent has before, he took it in stride, and did what was asked of him.  When he feuded with Santino Marella, and lost to him--on TV no less--he did the job, likely shook Santino’s hand backstage, and went on his way.

This is not meant to disrespect Santino, however, it’s more a statement of where Sheamus had slipped to, compared to where he had once been.

After all, the guy who was supposedly a friend, and workout buddy of Triple H, had worn the WWE Championship already, and was portrayed as a hard-nosed heel who just loved to fight.

That Sheamus was not losing to just anyone, and especially not on TV.

But, the man who was knee deep in mediocrity was a different Sheamus than what we were used to seeing.  And, that man could very well have said “enough.”

In this day and age of social media, it’s very easy for anyone to Tweet, Tout, or Facebook their problems for the whole world to see.  The truth is, WWE Superstars are no different, as just recently, JTG has gone this route on Twitter, followed by Zack Ryder, who subtly made the point that while he is wanted by fans, he is not wanted as much on TV by the company.

The fact is, every man’s situation is different, and just because some Superstars choose to air their grievances in front of everyone, does not mean that they are selfish, or that they do not have a point.

Every case has to be judged individually.

But for Sheamus, there was no complaining.  There was no talk of how he deserved more, that he was being pushed down, or held back.  For the Celtic Warrior, it was all about doing business. This is his career, and when working in your chosen profession, you learn to take the low points with the high points.

Sheamus did what he was told, he weathered the storm like a company guy, and now he is reaping the benefits.  And, for me, he is more than living up to what is expected of him now.

Every time he’s in the ring, Sheamus is bringing it.  He’s a bruiser with a smile, and a mean streak all the way back to Ireland.  He’s always ready for a brawl, a modern-day member of the Anderson family, a man who would have fit quite nicely in a six-man tag with Arn and Ole.

But more than that, he is, now more than ever before, championship material.  Sheamus is the right Superstar for the right title at the right time.  The crowd loves him, he’s doing his part, and yes, he is a workhorse in WWE.

Does he have his critics?  Of course.  Every Superstar does.  They say that he’s boring, that he has little charisma, that he’s not getting over, and an assortment of other complaints.

But while they hate, Sheamus is keeping his head down, doing what he’s told, and proving, match by match, that he has not only earned his place, but that he deserves it.

After all, it’s what he does best.
