Olympic Medal Count 2012: Analyzing America's Chances in Track & Field on Day 14
The United States has racked up 24 total medals and seven gold medals in track and field this summer in the 2012 London Olympics, but there is still plenty more action ahead.
The Americans have qualified for the men's pole vault, the women's 5,000 meters, the women's 1,500 meters, the men's 4X400 relay and the women's 4X100 relay on Day 14.
Here's a look at the United States' chances of medaling on Friday, complete with Thursday's medal count at the bottom.
Men's Pole Vault
This may be a tough event for the U.S. to medal in this time around, let alone win gold.
Brad Walker is largely seen as having an outside chance of medaling, ranked fifth among competitors according to Bovada odds.
Walker, 31, most recently won bronze in the pole vault in the 2012 World Indoor Championships. He goes up against favorite Renaud Lavillenie of France, who won gold in the event in the European Championships and World Indoor Championships this year.
Women's 5,000 meters
This is going to be another challenging event for the Americans on Friday.
Molly Huddle has the best chance of medaling, but she's collectively ranked seventh among several oddsbooks, per OddsChecker.com. Her greatest finish is a bronze in the 2010 Continental Cup.
Tirunesh Dibaba and Meseret Defar of Ethiopia rank in the top three in the event, per OddsChecker.com. Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot of Kenya ranks second.
Dibaba is generally considered the favorite. She not only ran the fastest Round 1 time (14:58.48), she's the reigning Olympic champion in the event. Oh yeah, and she also set the world record in the event in Oslo in 2008.
Women's 4X100-meter Relay
This should be a fantastic battle between the favored American team, the Jamaicans and Trinidad and Tobago.
The Americans haven't won the event since 1996, but medalists Allyson Felix (gold, 200 meters) and Carmelita Jeter (silver, 100 meters) are expected to be subbed into the team on Friday.
Jamaica will likely sub in the electric Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (gold, 100 meters) and Veronica Campbell-Brown (bronze, 100 meters).
The United States and Trinidad and Tobago had the best and second-best times respectively in Round 1 competition.
Women's 1,500 meters
Morgan Uceny of the United States has an outside chance of medaling in this event.
She did enough to advance to the final, but seven finalists have personal bests of under four minutes, while her personal best is 4:00.06. She finished 10th in the event in the 2011 World Championships.
Ethiopian Abeba Aregawi is the clear-cut favorite in the event. She advanced to the final with the best time (4:01.03) and she owns a personal best mark of 3:56.54.
Men's 4X400-meter Relay
The United States men have historically dominated this event, but the Bahamas figures to give the Americans a run for their gold.
The Bahamas and the United States both posted a mark of 2:58.87 in Round 1, with the Bahamas just barely edging the Americans by milliseconds.
The United States appears set to at least capture silver in the event, but the gold is surely no lock.
