Olympic Results 2012: Recapping Top Moments of Day 13
With only a few days of Olympic action remaining, we're getting closer and closer to the final medal matches of the summer.
And although the much-anticipated soccer and basketball finals have yet to happen, many of the other events—some of the best track and field matchups included—are just starting to wrap up.
Here's a look at everything you may have missed in London midway through Day 13.
Ashton Eaton Continues Quest for Glory in the Decathlon
Ever since the grueling decathlon started on Wednesday, Ashton Eaton has made it his mission to completely destroy the rest of the field en route to a gold medal.
Unfortunately, that plan hit a bit of a snag during some of the throwing events, putting his gold-medal bid slightly in jeopardy.
In the hurdles, Eaton finished second in his heat to fellow American Trey Hardee with a time of 13.56, the second-best time overall. He followed it up with a last-place finish in Group B in the discus throw, but he redeemed himself by finishing first in the pole vault.
As the decathlon draws to a close, expect this to continue to be a race between the two American contenders. Whatever the case, though, by the time this event comes to a close on Thursday, Eaton will certainly have some shiny new hardware to add to the world record he set during the Olympic Trials in June.
U.S. Women's Volleyball Wins
No, not Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings. The other U.S. volleyball stars.
With Thursday's 3-0 win over Korea, the U.S. women advanced to the gold-medal game and will face the winner of the other semifinal matchup between Brazil and Japan.
Unlike the case in many of the other events in which the U.S. women have established a tradition of excellence—basketball and soccer, for instance—the volleyball team has never won Olympic gold, but it looks like that could be changing very soon. The team showed heart and grit on Thursday, triumphing over Korean superstar Kim Yeon-Koung—who entered the game with a tournament-leading 165 points, according to the L.A. Times—and fighting back from a 20-17 deficit int the second set.
Now, the next stop is the finals, which take place on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. ET.
Canada Fights Back for Bronze Medal in Soccer
After enduring a heartbreaking loss to the U.S. in the semifinals on Monday, the Canadian women's soccer team bounced back with a hard-fought 1-0 win over France to lock up the bronze medal.
On Monday, Canada had three different leads against the U.S. but squandered them all, most notably in injury time, when Alex Morgan found the net to send the U.S. to the gold-medal game.
Despite the letdown, Canada still fought against France on Thursday, and behind Diana Matheson's injury-time goal, they powered their way to the bronze. According to the Huffington Post, it's Canada's first in a traditional team sport at the Olympics since 1936.
The Canadian women may not have been able to beat the U.S., but they still made history for their country.
