5 Things to Look for in RGIII's NFL Debut

Chris TrapassoJun 7, 2018

According to The Washington PostRobert Griffin III will take between 12 and 20 snaps tonight in his Washington Redskins debut against the Buffalo Bills, just enough plays to zero in and analyze many attributes of his game.

The game starts at 7 pm EST and will be played in Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, NY.

RG3 is one of the most highly touted quarterback prospects to ever enter the NFL, a Heisman Trophy winner with potentially transcendent abilities.

Here are the five things to look for while Griffin III's on the field this evening.

His Accuracy

1 of 5

Griffin III completed a ridiculous 72.4 percent of his passes in 2011 with the Baylor Bears, and he was hardly operating a dink-and-dunk offensive system.

He averaged 10.7 yards per attempt which is an extremely high number.

To put in perspective, Andrew Luck finished the year with 8.7 yards per attempt and Brandon Weeden averaged 8.4 yards per attempt.

So, despite his immense talents as a runner, RG3 is undoubtedly an accurate pocket passer.

Actually, he was in college, tonight is the first time he'll throw passes against an NFL defense.

See if Griffin III is able to throw the ball with as much consistent accuracy enough, and check his yards per attempt when his night is complete.

(Reminder: RG3 may have a few games with a YPA average over 10.7, but he won't finish that high for the 2012 season. Aaron Rodgers led the NFL with a 9.25 YPA in 2011.)

His Pocket Presence

2 of 5

Griffin III was extremely accurate in college, and some of his accuracy was precipitated by outstanding presence and poise in the pocket.

He calmly floated away from pressure from all angles and always wanted to stay in the pocket to deliver the football downfield.

Against what should be one of the better defensive lines in the AFC, with good pass-rushers at all four positions, it'll be interesting to see if the steady demeanor Griffin III exhibited in college has translated to the NFL.

How Well He Scrambles

3 of 5

Though RG3 was an established and dynamic passer in college, there's no reason to downplay his talents as a scrambler.

His dual-threat ability is one of the reasons he was the No. 2 overall pick in this year's draft and helped him win the Heisman Trophy.

He racked up 699 yards on the ground and 10 rushing touchdowns in 2011. During his career at Baylor, he totaled over 2,220 rushing yards with 33 scores.

With Mario Williams, Marcell Dareus, Kyle Williams and Mark Anderson attacking him, how Griffin III handles the pressure and gains positive yardage with his feet is worth watching.

How Much He Distributes the Football

4 of 5

With Griffin III throwing the passes, Baylor had five pass-catchers with 15 or more receptions in 2011.

After the Redskins spent big money in free agency to acquire wide receivers like Pierre Garcon and Josh Morgan, Washington has given RG3 at least a few dynamic playmakers in the passing game.

Santana Moss and Fred Davis are holdovers, but they still are viable targets.

RG3 will likely find a favorite receiving weapon, but it'll be advantageous to him and the Redskins offense if he distributes the ball to as many wideouts and tight ends as possible.

Though he's playing at the most 20 snaps, it'll be interesting to see if he locks onto a guy like Garcon, of if he's looking for all his pass-catchers.

How Quick He Is to Scramble and How Well He Takes a Hit

5 of 5

RG3 was lauded for his affinity to stay in the pocket and throw the football in 2011, but where will his comfort level be in the NFL?

As stated previously, the Bills will send a myriad of pass-rushers Griffin III's way.

From that, and there's no guarantees, but how will RG3 handle the first time he takes a "professional hit."

Via The Boston Globe per the AP, Griffin III had this to say about contact:

"

To be honest, if I don’t get hit in the preseason, I would be very OK with that. I am not going to go in the game, saying, ‘I hope Marcell Dareus hits me as hard as he possibly can.’ That’s not going to come out of my mouth.”

"

It'll definitely be worth watching if and when he leaves the pocket and tucks the ball down to run.
