US Olympic Wrestling Team 2012: USA's Strongest Medal Contenders
The US Olympic wrestling team is not getting the amount of headlines as their swimming or track counterparts, but they are not without talent.
They have some excellent medal contenders set to work towards their golden dreams in the coming days, and these next three athletes should add some hardware to their country's haul.
Jordan Burroughs, Men's Freestyle 74 kg
Jordan Burroughs is the most dominant wrestler on the team. In 2011, he won both the Hodges Award—given to the best collegiate wrestler—and a gold at the World Championships.
He has not lost a match since 2009. That stretch includes a perfect 34-0 record as a professional.
Burroughs is a dominant force right now, and it would be a surprise if he came back with anything short of gold.
Ali Bernard, Women's Freestyle 72 kg
Ali Bernard is an Olympics veteran. She just missed out on a medal in Beijing when she lost the bronze medal match.
She has made some nice improvements since her last Olympics, and she took the bronze in the World Championships last year. Included in that bronze-medal run was a win over 2008 Olympic gold medalist China's Jiao Wang.
Kelsey Campbell, Women's Freestyle 55 kg
It would be a huge upset if Kelsey Campbell won the gold. That is not a statement on her ability as much as it is she is in the same weight class as Japan's Saori Yoshida. Since 2002, Yoshida has won every World Championship and Olympic gold medal in this weight class.
At least Campbell is not a stranger to upsets. She pulled one off to win the U.S. Olympic Trials by beating Helen Maroulis.
Campbell is also no stranger to winning. She was twice a national collegiate champion.
