Olympic Medal Count 2012: Nations That Have Flopped in the Medal Tally

Dan TalintyreJun 7, 2018

The 2012 London Olympics Games are coming to close.

For many nations, the Games have been an absolute success—clinching gold medals they never expected to win and proving to the world that they are a powerhouse in international sport.

Nations like the United States, China and host Great Britain are dominating the medal tally, and rightly so. They have been superb throughout the Games.

However, for every winner there has to be a loser, and the 2012 London Olympics have been quite a loss for some nations. Plenty of countries entered the London Olympics expecting to dominate events and clinch several medals, but have been fallen well short of their goals.

Let's take a look at the nations that have spluttered, flopped, not lived up to the hype—whatever you want to to call it—in the 2012 London Olympics.

Australia: 31 medals, seven gold

Australia has long been considered one of the top sporting nations in the world and as a result, their performance at the 2012 Olympics was expected to reflect that fact.

But after an early gold in the women's 4x100 meter relay, the Aussies struggled to land another gold medal until the sailing events began to finish. And whilst they now have seven gold and 31 medals in total next to their name, they simply haven't lived up to expectations.

In comparison, Australia won 46 medals including 14 gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics—a number that was even higher in the 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens Olympics.

Cuba: 10 medals, three gold

Tough to rip on the smaller sporting nations here, but again, compared to the 2008 Olympics, Cuba hasn't delivered on the expectations that many had for them.

The 24 medals they won four years ago is more than double what they have now—despite the fact that they have more gold medals in these Olympics than last time. They just haven't been making the podium finishers that many expected them to be making at London.

Ukraine: 13 medals, three gold

Ukraine, for me, is another country that really should be doing better at these Olympic Games. Just 13 medals and three gold medals is not good enough for a country that has shown before they can be a sporting dominance.

The European nation bagged 27 medals and seven gold medals in Beijing; numbers that are both halved this time around in the 2012 London Olympics.

Let's hope that all three nations can increase their medal count before the conclusion of the 2012 London Olympics. View the full medal tally so far via the official website for the 2012 London Olympics—as posted below.
