2012 Summer Olympics: Power Ranking Women's Basketball Semifinal Teams

Tyler ConwayJun 7, 2018

The women's basketball tournament at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London is down just four teams after the first round of medal-round action

Those four teams are the United States, Australia, France and Russia.

The United States women come into play as 1/20 favorites (via Bovada.lv) after taking down Canada's national team, 91-48, and will play Australia in their next game.

France will match up against Russia in a battle of two Cinderella stories.

The French women went undefeated in Group B play and pulled off a shocking upset against world No. 2 Australia.

Russia is coming off a similarly shocking upset of Group A second-place team Turkey in the first round of elimination round action.

But as we head into the semifinals, which team remaining is the best? Follow along as we power rank the four remaining women's teams at the 2012 Summer Olympics

4. Russia

1 of 4

With a shocking 66-63 upset over Turkey, Russia punched its ticket to the semifinals off of a brilliant 19-point performance from Becky Hammon.

The 35-year-old gunning guard came out firing, knocking down three shots from beyond the arc and adding five assists to her performance.

And considering Russia is sitting pretty on the weaker side of the bracket, their Cinderella run may not be over just yet.

Up next for the Russians is France, who went undefeated in Group B play, but only won 65-54 in their first matchup against the upstart Russia squad. That's a much better fate than playing either Team USA or Australia, two teams stacked with forwards and centers much too tall for the guard-heavy Russians.

3. France

2 of 4

Things looked drab for the French as they headed into the fourth quarter against Czech Republic down 51-41 and looked lost offensively in the process.

But a sensational 10-point fourth-quarter performance from Celine Dumerc and some late-game clutch free throws spurred France to a 71-68 victory and their sixth consecutive win in Olympic competition.

Coming in to the Olympics, most expected the French to compete in the latter half of Group B. But their run could go down as one of the most shocking in Olympic history if they can defeat Russia and find more magic against the winner of the United States/Australia contest.

It's highly unlikely, but the team's 30-point fourth quarter should tell you there's seemingly nothing this Cinderella squad cannot do.

2. Australia

3 of 4

In their first-round matchup of medal round play against China, Australia once again proved its prowess in the middle.

The two-headed monster of Liz Cambage and Lauren Jackson combined for 29 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks as they held the Chinese bigs to just 6-for-20 shooting from the field.

Unfortunately for Australia, their 74-70 heartbreaking loss to France will likely prevent the world's second-best team from a shot at gold. The Australians will head into a semifinals match against Team USA as heavy underdogs and will need a massive combined performance from Cambage and Jackson to even have a shot.

But with one of Team USA's biggest weaknesses coming in the middle, the Australian twin towers could pull off a shocker. And if they do, they could set up a rematch with France in the gold-medal game.

1. United States

4 of 4

The United States again exuded their dominance against Canada, extending their Olympic winning streak to 39 games in a 91-47 romp over their neighbors from the north.

Team USA survived a rare mediocre shooting performance, hitting at just a 47.3 percent clip after shooting 55.0 percent in the team's preliminary round contests.

Diana Taurasi once again led the way for the Americans with 15 points on 5-for-7 shooting while Candace Parker survived an ankle injury scare to add 12 points and seven rebounds of her own.

Up next for Team USA is Australia, who came into London as the team many thought could challenge the United States for Olympic gold.

But the French upset of the Australians sets up a scenario where one of the two best teams in the world will walk home without a shot at Olympic gold.
