Olympic Medal Tally 2012: Biggest Surprises in the Total Count so Far
While countries like Argentina and Greece have been shockingly bad at the 2012 London Olympics so far, others like South Korea and New Zealand have made their supporters proud.
Surprises, both good and bad, have dominated the medal tally headlines at the Summer Games in 2012.
Through the first 10.5 days of the Games, China is cruising, the host nation is overachieving and the Japanese are coming up short when it matters most.
Without further ado, here are the biggest surprises in the total medal count so far from London.
Great Britain
The host nation has been nothing short of brilliant so far at the 2012 Games, showing the rest of the world what they are made of, dominating in sports such as tennis, cycling and the triathlon.
Whether it's been Andy Murray crushing winners at Wimbledon, Bradley Wiggins cruising past the finish line for gold on his bike or the Brownlee brothers outlasting the competition in the men's triathlon, the British have been surprising in their success.
Great Britain has fought valiantly to remain behind China and the United States in the total medal count throughout the Games.
Japan
Contrary to Great Britain, Japan has had a disappointing Summer Olympics, at least in terms of gold medals. The Japanese had just two gold medals midway through Day 11 at the Games.
Japan's position on the total medal tally is hardly surprising, but for a nation as talented and as proud as Japan to have crowned only two champions through two-thirds of the Olympics is outright shocking.
Japan has featured plenty of world-class athletes in the pool and on the field this summer, but for whatever reason they can't seem to cash in on gold.
Hungary, Cuba and Kazakhstan are just a trio of nations with surprisingly more gold medals than Japan so far at the London Olympics.
Spain
A European nation with a population of over 46 million, Spain has fared surprisingly poorly through the first 10 or so days of the 2012 Games.
The Spanish boast just six medals at the Olympics, including only one gold medal. Not to mention it took Spain nearly a week to finally get on the board with its first medal.
Based on Spain's success in international football, many Olympic viewers had high hopes for the Spanish heading into the Games.
The failure of the Spanish men's soccer team to even get out of the group stage epitomized the nation's struggles in London this summer.
