London 2012 Medal Count: Athletes Who Will Add to Team USA's Total on Day 11

Ian HanfordJun 7, 2018

Team USA trails China by one medal in the overall standings entering Day 11 of Olympic competition, but that will change very quickly if a handful of athletes have anything to say about it.

Gold medals will be up for grabs all across the board in London on Tuesday, and American athletes will have their hands in deciding who stands on the medal podium in much of this decisive action.

The 2012 Summer Olympics are coming down to the quick, and medals are extremely important for the American squad at this point. Every effort matters, and any mistake will be magnified.

Let's take a look at a few athletes who will do their part for Team USA in Day 11 of Olympic action.

Jesse Williams

You could really plug any of Team USA's high jumpers into this spot, but I'll stick with Williams here.

Williams didn't have the best qualifying round. He jumped below his personal best of 2.37 meters, or 7'9 1/4", but he still managed to get through to the final. He will now look to avenge his ninth place (qualifying) finish from the 2008 games.

It's not like Williams hasn't had success. He won gold at the 2011 World Championships, and he captured gold again at the 2011 USA Indoor Championships. He's a world-class jumper who just happened to have an off day in London.

Look for Williams to avenge his disappointing finish in Beijing with a medal-winning performance in London. He's won major events before, and we know what he's capable of doing.

Gabby Douglas

Douglas will compete in the women's balance beam final, and anything less than a bronze medal would be shocking. She's already won two gold medals in London, but don't be surprised if she adds a third on Tuesday.

This is arguably her best event. We've seen her put up a 15.266 score already this summer, and that should be enough to earn her a medal in this one. If she can repeat that performance, she will be happy.

Team USA wants to continue their success in women's gymnastics. It helps their overall medal count, and it adds to the overall success of their women's team.

Douglas has been the leader of that team thus far, and she will continue that with another spectacular performance in this year's balance beam final.

Aly Raisman

It may seem repetitive to stick with women's gymnastics, but Raisman is impossible to overlook in the women's floor exercise final.

This is her domain. She scored a 15.325 earlier in London's action. That routine was nearly flawless, and she will come close to repeating that performance on Tuesday. If she does, a medal will not be an issue.

Raisman will have competition. American teammate Jordyn Wieber will be hungry to prove herself, and Vanessa Ferrari is an excellent floor artist herself, but Raisman is riding a lot of momentum. She wasn't expected to perform the way she has in London, and that won't end here.

Expect these three athletes, and other surprises, to add to Team USA's overall medal count in Day 11 of London's events.
