Olympic Medal Count 2012: Countries with Most to Gain in London's Remaining Days
China and the United States are alone at the top of the Olympics' overall medal count, and that isn't going to change barring an unforeseen miracle, but that doesn't mean the rest of the Olympic standings aren't going to shuffle.
A few countries are yet to reach their pivotal moment. Certain countries dominate specific events every time the Olympics roll around, and they will climb the standings once those events take place this summer.
Let's take a look at which countries will have a chance to improve their overall standing in London's remaining days.
United States
We will get the easy one out of the way first. The United States has six days of track and field events to catch China at the top of the overall medal standings.
Team USA dominate track and field every Olympics. It doesn't matter if it's sprinting, hurdling, throwing or jumping, the United States will have a contender in the majority of London's remaining track and field festivities.
The American squad won't fare well in distance races, and they won't win gold medals in all the others, but they will surely rack up their fair share of medals.
In this case, the United States only has to worry about one country. Catching China is their only goal at this point, and track and field events will make that possible.
Kenya
Long-distance races are dominated by Kenya each and every year. It doesn't matter if it's one of the world's many marathons or Olympic competition.
The bad news for Kenya so far is that they only have five medals overall. The good news is that nearly every distance run is still on the Olympic slate. That doesn't mean Kenya is going to make a run at the top of the leaderboard, but they will better themselves in the end.
This goes for both the men's and women's side. It doesn't matter if it's a long-distance run, or walk. Kenya will be in the leader's pack of several track events before London's action comes to a close.
Cuba
For Cuba, the rest of their Olympic action comes down to boxing. A few of their expected contenders have been eliminated, but five boxers remain in their respected division tournaments.
The only team who can rival Cuba is Great Britain. Several British boxers remain in the medal hunt, but Cuba can gain ground in the overall standings with strong performances in the ring.
This isn't a surprise. Cuba has 63 boxing medals in Olympic history. That's second to the United States. Team USA's group isn't strong this year, and Cuba should take advantage of that.
They aren't known for many sports, but look for Cuba to dominate the remaining boxing competition.
