Olympic Medal Count 2012: Athletes Who Will Boost USA's Total on Day 11
Team USA is in a great position to boost its 2012 Olympics medal count with a host of elite athletes ready to take the stage on Tuesday, Day 11 in London.
This is good news for the Americans, who are going to need all the medals they can muster if they want to win the overall medal tally.
They have been in a virtual tie with China atop the medal leaderboard for their entire stay in London. These next athletes will help make sure they don't fall any farther behind.
Jordyn Wieber and Aly Raisman: Women's Gymnastics Floor Exercise
Raisman is the clear favorite here. Her two scores for the floor exercise (15.325 and 15.300) in qualifying and the team competition are both higher than anything anyone else has turned in in London.
If she nails her routine, she will win gold.
This will leave Romania's Sandra Raluca Izbasa and Jordyn Wieber to battle it out for the silver. They are the only other two women in London to score at least 15 on their floor exercise.
Izbasa's scores have been better than Wieber's, but I'm looking for Wieber to turn in a flawless routine in her only chance to grab an individual medal in London.
Jesse Williams: Men's High Jump
Williams is the reigning world high jump champion, but he almost didn't qualify for the trip to London. He finished fourth at the U.S. Trials, and only the top three advance. However, the third place finisher had not met the "A" standard, which allowed Williams to make the trip.
This kind of poor performance would seem to indicate he is not on the top of his game, however, he later revealed that he was jumping at the Trials on an ankle he sprained while playing basketball.
He easily qualified for the finals, and looked completely healthy and ready to be a huge factor for gold.
Danell Leyva: Men's Gymnastics High Bar
Danell Leyva is unbelievable on the high bar. His 15.700 on this apparatus in the individual all-around was a big reason why he was able to claim the bronze in that competition.
If the high bar field was not as stacked as it is, he would be a near lock for the gold. However, with China's Zou Kai and Japan's Kohei Uchimura in the mix, this gold could go any direction.
Still, unless Leyva makes a major mistake, he will walk away with at least a bronze.
