Watch Drew Brees Dance as Mike Mayock Serenades Brad Nessler on Live TV

Things got a little weird during the Hall of Fame game on Sunday night.

Midway through the fourth quarter, the Canton public address staff decided (wisely) to begin playing Wild Cherry's "Play That Funky Music White Boy." Now, normally the story would end there and the only result would have been thousands rushing to iTunes, wondering how that song wasn't in their library already.

During the preseason, however, all bets are off.

Drew Brees had been done for the night since the first drive. Coincidentally, that was one more drive than the Arizona Cardinals first-team defense showed up for. Brees led his team down the field for a touchdown and then parked himself on the sideline with a bag of David's sunflower seeds.

Then, the magic happened.

As funky beats started playing over the P.A. system, Brees broke into one of the most non-nonchalant yet awesome dance moves of all-time. Never before has an NFL player so clearly pantomimed "13-year-old at a Sadie Hawkins dance" cool. The night would've truly been complete had Brees broken down, sobbing, "I'm the $100 million man, will you dance with me now Virginia McIntosh!?!"

Note how Brees plays off his killer dance moves as teammates walk by. "What's that? Dancing? No, why would I have been dancing?"

Had the clip ended there, it would have been enough to liven up a boring preseason fourth quarter. Instead, Mike Mayock decided to take America further down the funky rabbit hole by singing along.

He kept singing...and singing....and singing.

The moment went from hilariously awkward to awkwardly hilarious, eventually straying into "sad old man on the subway" territory. Kudos to consummate pro, Brad Nessler, who clearly did not enjoy Wild Cherry's jam to the satisfaction of Mayock. One can only assume that Mayock spent the post-game convincing Nessler that he just didn't understand the song and maybe if he came back to the trailer and turned the lights off, he'd appreciate it more.

It's hard not to feel bad for Nessler, but remember that Mayock has a daughter:

"

Omg... That guy 'singing' on national television is NOT my dad hahahah #norelation

— Leigh Mayock (@LeighMayock) August 6, 2012"
"

Don't get me wrong tho, I'm still mortified #mayock #HOFgame #imNEVERlettinghimdothatagain

"

Also, apparently this wasn't an uncommon occurrence in the Mayock family:

"

U guys don't understand..Dad used 2 take the mic @ my dances he chaperoned when I was younger & 'rap' 2 sugar hill gang in front of EVERY1

— Leigh Mayock (@LeighMayock) August 6, 2012"

The reaction on Twitter, from those not related to the commentator ranged from good-natured hilarity to ridiculous pomposity. Mayock and Brees may not have done what was expected, but they did what was natural—curing the boredom of meaningless football by rocking out to the anthem of middle-aged white boys everywhere.
