Olympic Diving 2012: China's Breathtaking Dominance Continues

John RozumJun 7, 2018

China has been perfect through five diving events at the 2012 Summer Olympics.

In even more dominating fashion that the 2008 Beijing Games where they came away with 11 total medals (seven of which were gold), China upped the ante for London.

With three events remaining, it's reasonable to anticipate the Chinese will remain perfect.

To that end, let's get you caught up on China's perfect sweep into the pool.

China Springs Ahead with First Gold

1 of 5

He Zi and Wu Minxia blew away the competition during the Women's Synchronized, 3-meter Springboard.

Scoring a total of 346.2 and averaging no less than 8.8 points per dive, this duo won by 24.3 points over the USA's Kelci Bryant and Abigail Johnston who took the silver.

There's simply no match for He and Wu.

(Near) Perfect-Form on the Platform

For as unbelievable as China has been in diving, the synchronization of Cao Yuan and Zhang Yanquan in the Men's Synchronized, 10-meter Platform was arguably the most impressive performance.

In totaling 486.78 points, Cao and Zhang won gold by 17.88 points and four of their five dives averaged 9.2 points or more. It was a near-perfect display where the closest description is that of a flawless victory.

Again Flirting with Platform Perfect

3 of 5

The greatest margin-of-victory in point-differential in synchronized diving came from Chen Ruolin and Wang Hao.

Winning the Women's Platform, 10-meter gold by 25.08 points, Chen and Wang compiled 368.4 points and the only dive that averaged below nine points was the first with 8.9.

If anything, this tag-team was arguably the most consistent of all the Chinese diving duos.

Golden Synchronization Complete

4 of 5

Closing out the synchronized diving portion for China is Luo Yutong and Qin Kai in the Men's Springboard, 3-meter.

They collected 477 points and won the gold by 17.37 over Russia's Ilya Zakharov and Evgeny Kuznetsov. On three of their dives Luo and Qin averaged at least nine points which was more than Russia and the United States' medalists combined (one each at nine-plus in the finals).

So, it was no surprise that China came away with another gold.

Women's 3m Springboard Duo Goes 1-2 as Individuals

5 of 5

Making it a perfect five-of-five, China not only took gold but silver as well in the Women's Springboard, 3-meter.

The silver was won by He Zi with a score of 379.2 which was 16.8 points ahead of Mexico's Laura Sanchez Soto who won bronze.

Gold, however, was crushed by He's synchronized teammate Wu Minxia who scored a whopping 414 points. You don't see performances like that very often, but it's no shock coming from Wu considering that she's a three-time Olympian.
