Olympics 2012 TV Schedule: What to Watch For on Day 8

Jessica MarieJun 7, 2018

One week from now, it will almost be all over.

But until then, there's still plenty of Olympic action to look forward to on Day 8.

Saturday marks the last day of swimming events—at least, in the pool, because the open water events will be held next weekend—so as a result, Saturday marks your last chance to see Michael Phelps compete in the pool. Ever.

The greatest Olympian ever, who is due to retire following the conclusion of the 2012 Games, will take to the water one last time on Saturday for the men's 4x100-meter medley relay. Here's all the information you need to make sure you don't miss that—and a few other select events—on Day 8 of London 2012.

You can see the full Day 8 TV schedule here.

Men's 4x100-Meter Medley Relay Final
3:27 p.m. ET
TV: NBC, 8 p.m. - 12 a.m. ET (Tape Delay)
Live Stream: NBCOlympics.com

This is it: Phelps' final curtain call. His last chance to win a medal. Our last chance to see him achieve Olympic glory.

The greatest swimmer ever will retire when all is said and done on Saturday, and if all goes the way it's supposed to, he'll retire with yet another gold medal to his name. If he places in the 100-meter butterfly on Friday and in the relay on Saturday, he will retire with 22 total medals.

Not a bad way to end your career.

According to the Chicago Tribune, joining Phelps in the pool on Saturday will be Matt Grevers, Nathan Adrian and Brendan Hansen, all of whom have medaled in London this summer and all of whom expect to win on Saturday. Per the same report by the Tribune, the U.S. has won every 4x100 medley relay they've participated in at the Olympics.

In Friday's qualifier, a team featuring Nick Thoman, Eric Shanteau, Tyler McGill and Cullen Jones registered the fastest time, finishing in 3:32:65. They've perfectly set up Phelps' opportunity on Saturday; don't miss his last shot at glory.

Men's Basketball: Lithuania vs. U.S.
9:30 a.m. ET
TV: NBC Sports Network
Live Stream: NBCOlympics.com

How do you followup a game in which you broke an Olympic record by scoring 156 points?

We'll soon find out.

Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James & Co. destroyed Nigeria by a whopping 83 points on Thursday night to improve to 3-0 in Olympic play, and next up, they'll face Lithuania, whose only win thus far came against Nigeria.

Nobody is realistically expecting Lithuania to do any damage against the U.S. men, especially after the Americans proved that A) they can come out of the gates strong and B) they can light it up from long range after setting an Olympic record for three-pointers with 26, according to the AP.

But Lithuania has tallied three bronze medals in past Olympics, so don't be surprised if it puts up a bit more of a fight than you're accustomed to seeing against the U.S. men.

Track & Field: Men's 100-Meter Heats, Round 1
5 a.m. ET, 7:30 a.m. ET
TV: NBC, 11:15 - 11:45 a.m. ET (Tape Delay)
Live Stream: NBCOlympics.com

For those of you amped to get up bright and early for the kickoff of the track and field action, NBCOlympics.com's live stream will have you covered. The rest of you will just have to wait until NBC airs its tape-delayed coverage later in the morning.

Though the Olympics have been going on for more than a week, the track and field portion of the program is just getting started. As a result, those of you who have been waiting to see whether Usain Bolt is still the fastest man in the world—or whether his Jamaican teammate Yohan Blake can challenge him—are finally in luck.

Bolt, Blake and Americans Justin Gatlin and Tyson Gay have received byes until Round 1 of the 100-meter sprint, which will take place at 7:30 a.m. ET. In the heats, you can get your first glimpse at whoever plans to give Bolt and Blake a run for their money. Who knows, you may very well discover the next Bolt.

Then, during Round 1, the fun truly begins. Will Gatlin—who is finally making a comeback after a doping ban—be able to compete with Bolt? We'll soon find out.
